Question Problem in Steering Column?

Is there a way to test for problems in the steering column without taking it apart? I have a noise which sounds like a metallic rubbing sounds when I am in a slow hard turn. I know there are bearings in the steering column so that might be the problem but I would like to know for sure without completely tearing it apart. It doesn't sound like an easy job to do.

Thanks,

Griz

Mine did the same...I took it apart and found that the contacts for the horn were dry. I put some dielectric grease on them and it was good after that. I ended up having to do that every year or so.

Really...where are the contacts for the horn?

You have to pull steering wheel off and then you'll see there is a springy copper tab (contact) that slides on a copper ring. Sometimes the tab may even wear a groove in the ring causing noise. The one I did, didn't have cruise or even tilt steering, so I'm not sure what entails pulling the steering wheel on those models.

Okay...maybe mine is different then. I have cruise control and tilt steering. It appears the contacts for the horn are inside the steering wheel pad assembly. The spring tab idea though sounds about right for the sound I am hearing. I guess there is no other way around it but to pull the steering wheel off and have a look see.

Ive got the same sound. At first I thought it was my power steering pump but its brand new. I just put a new steering wheel on and saw the 4 horn contacts and didnt think to grease them. Ill try that and see if it work. My stepdad said it felt like a bearing in the steering column was bad or something.

There are two bearings in the steering wheel column assembly. I plan to pull the steering wheel and give the internals the greasy eye inspection and see what's is up. I don't need steering problems down the road.

Some of us have a tendency to grab the wheel to assist us with getting in. The steering shaft wears out and the bearings go. Don't wait to fix this. It cost me a new shaft, only available from FORD, plust three days repair time. Luckily I have an extra car but it's still not a fun job to do. The wheel gets all sloppy in the column and could lock up. Hence you won't be able to steer it!
