PSD's idling in traffic?

Just curious, how well do PSD's tolerate idling in traffic for long periods of time compared to a gas engine?

Re: PSD's idling in traffic?

Waaaaay better, from a heat point of view. The longer they idle the cooler they get, to the point that you should idle it up a bit when stopped for extended periods. If you have an automatic, you should put it in nuetral if not moving for awhile as the converter generates alot of heat when not locked.

Re: PSD's idling in traffic?

JOAT, I remember reading somewhere that it is better to leave the E4OD in park if the truck will be running for some time. I believe the pump will not pump fluid to all critical areas in nuetral, only in park. That is why we check the fluid level in park, not nuetral.

Re: PSD's idling in traffic?

ahh that dude will Idle all day and all night as long as it has diesel. It IS good to idle it up if its idleing for more than 30 mins due to whats known as "diesel wash". Diesel wash is where the the unburnt fuel washes the cylinder walls. I think 1200 rpms is a good idle up number. Dont let this scare ya tho, if your just in stop and go traffic i really wouldnt worry about it.

Re: PSD's idling in traffic?

i think we also call it "wet stacking", my understanding was that the un-burnt fuelwill build up on the valves as carbon and cause bad seal, and thats bad, so get an AIC for over half an hour straight. If you do have it idle for a while in a unavoidable situation, get it hot asap, go on the highway with a load for a buncha miles and burn all the crap off.

I think thats the theory idea of it, someone correct me if im wrong
