Coming home from work today I was running on the rear tank (had been for 75 miles or so) and the truck started to miss, like it dropped a cylinder then another then another. Temp was 12* this morning when I started. Truck started normally, I left work and made it about 2 miles when this started. No CEL, the truck started smoking very heavy like an old Mack when started very cold (no mosquitos around, that's for sure!) Truck finally stalled, I switched to the front tank and tried to restart. It started but was running rough, smoothed out and ran OK. Once on the interstate I switched back to the rear tank and everything is fine. I got home and parked this morning and went to bed. This afternoon truck started OK (one cylinder dead, maybe two). The cold miss went away after 30 seconds or so - I think it's time for glow plugs again.
I was thinking maybe some ice in the system somewhere, any ideas?

Sounds electrical. Or does it feel like your running out of fuel? I'd say first thing is check all the plugs on the V/C's to make sure they are in tight and not melted. Glowplugs wouldnt matter b/c you were going down the road when this had all started to happen. Could it be fuel gelling?

Sounds like an issue between the rear tank & the fuel tank switch, I got better after that...just a thought...

Tim, I was thinking fuel gelling as well. I have never run across wiring problems with injectors/glow plugs that did not set a CEL. I did put some fuel treatment in the rear tank (front tank is about empty)
action4478 - you may have it. It did not occur to me that the fuel tank selector solenoid may have just hung up on something or maybe a bit of ice in it from the sudden drop in temperature.
Thanks for the input.

I was dealing with one truck a while back that kept on shutting off injectors and it never set a CEL. It was a 97. Turned out to be IDM and engine wiring harness. The truck had eaten 3 IDM's before we decided to change the engine wiring harness.
