Rear axle makes growling sound.

Well lets start like this. This is my second rear end I have killed. The first the pinion bearings failed and made a mess and the one that replaced it was a factory 3.55 or watever it is with limited slip that had 80K on it. Now it Do drag race and run in pulls occasionally but just out of the blue the rear end started sounding like it had marbles in it at slow speeds and whines while driving. There was no metal shavings or any chipped teeth or abnormal wear. Is it possible for the pinion depth to change over time if I didn't touch the yoke or crush collar?? Could the back lash have come out of whack from abuse?? Im at a loss and don't want to start slinging parts I don't need.

Ok, you drag race...Run in pulls.
Could it be that you (hurt it) didn't quite break but started something on it's way. Now it's starting to manifest it's self. Anything can be broken. Just a matter of time. Hey you abused it. Now it's like an old dog that don't like the way you treat it. GRRRRR!!!

You'll just have to take it apart and try and fined or feel the roughness.

Do I have to re shim the pinion depth if I change the inner bearing or is just a slap in and go.

I believe any changes, or re anything, should require you to measure and make sure of gear alignment and lash. Do it up right and it will last longer. Other wise it will just be a matter of time. Or you could get lucky. Do you feel lucky today.

If the race is ok then I may feel lucky and just set the pinion bearing preload with a new crush sleeve and hope for the best.
