Replacing rear axle seal

Have the usual Mess with the seal leaking. Will replace today but have a question for the forum. I have read on some posts that the seal leaks because of a vent stopping up and causing the diff fluid to push out of seals when it heats up. I was checking my diff and can find no hose on the top or a vent of any kind. So do the seals just fail or is this a defect. Thanks to all , love this forum!!

The vent is where your hard brake lines connect to that T. There should be a short barb/nipple sticking up off of the T. If there isn't one there then it has broken off and is probably plugged up which would cause a leaky seal. The other possibility for the leaky seal is that either the seal just plain failed or there is a groove cut into the axle shaft. There is a saver kit you can get for it.

Thanks for the reply! There is no groove in the shaft as far as I can tell. I did replace the seal and the brakes last night. I replaced the front wheel bearings when I brought this beast home and have done all the filter changes with a new battery to boot. It is running great for now. Geeeze, what a job to get those shoes back on, those small springs are a b***h! I will check around the Diff today. I will check the other side brakes since I have a new set of shoes, might put them on if needed but prob wont. This all started with the spongy brake pedal. I am hoping new shoes and good adjustment will bring the pedal up get it stoppin better.
