Rough Running Power Stroke

My 96 Powerstroke will start running rough all of the sudden and the check engine light will come on. It has 191,000 miles and has never done this before. It will do it for awhile and then smooth out and run fine. It is sporadic and feels like maybe an injector has become clogged. Any Ideas?

Re: Rough Running Power Stroke

Check the valve cover wiring & if need be ,look at the wiring under the covers...They can come partly un plugged....If you can ,read the code ...It could be an ICP sensor problem also....

Re: Rough Running Power Stroke

I have a '97 PSD with 369k miles on it that has been experiencing the same difficulties for about 6,000 miles (my engine light is not coming on though). The vibration is related to engine rpm, not vehicle speed or gear selection. I have changed the oil and fuel filter. I have recently replaced one injector and I just re-routed the crankcase ventilation system to where it is not blowing into the turbo inlet tube. I believe the problem to be fuel related, low fuel pressure, icp related, etc., but have not been able to completely cure the problem. The vibration seems to occur only after the truck has warmed up, but if I pull off of the road and let the truck sit and idle for a while the problem dissipates for a while. I haven't recently run a diagnostic, but will do so again in the near future. Any insights on the cause of this problem are deeply appreciated.

Regards,
Dave

Re: Rough Running Power Stroke

I've got the same issue - #1 son ran truck out of fuel and since then I have been getting a CEL at start up and intermittently with really rough running and major power loss then the light will disappear and all is fine. If I am on the road and the CEL comes on I can let off the pedal and let the RPM's drop and the CEL will go away most of the time.
I have recently installed a new fuel pump and HP hoses and new filter, but like I mentioned, this started right after he ran it out of fuel. PLEASE HELP. I do not have a code reader to check the code and I don't want to drive it the 25 miles to an Auto Zone to have it read.

WAG...

you may want to check fuel pressure at idle & at WOT......If the problem is "fuel " related , may be a problem in the tank (pickup tube) , or weak pump ,maybe cloged FPR screen....

Again, just a WAG.....

Might want to check your EBP sensor. The tube and sensor get clogged. This can cause performance issues. If you have a lot of miles on your truck yours is probably pretty clogged. Mine was at 165k miles. Good preventative maintenance if nothing else. FYI, if you try to poke around in it and clean it out with a screw driver you will probably damage the sensor. Here is a link that tells about the sensor. ECSD - Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) Sensor - 1994-1997 Power Stroke FAQ
