Slow Cranking

When I start my truck, it spins over fast at first then slows down. It got so bad last week it would hardly roll over. My batteries are missmatched and old, so I replaced both of them with 850 CCA. I thought I had it fixed, but I noticed it again this morning. The truck has 165000 miles on it and runs very well. I'm not sure what to check next. Any ideas? Re: Slow Cranking

Inspect your battery cables really close. They might be bad. If they look okay, have your starter tested.

Re: Slow Cranking

Yes, starter. Weak batteries and/or lots of cranking will wear it out. I was going through one a year when it got cold. Now with the GP's disconnected, and a shot of ether, I'm off, and the starter made it through the winter .

Re: Slow Cranking

Has anyone rebuilt their starter? Can you even get brushes for it or is it worth it?

Re: Slow Cranking

I know NAPA couldn't get me any parts, didn't check w/ our local rebuild shop, but they could probably do it. You can replace it with a SD gear reduction starter or just another one like you have. I put a reman from NAPA on mine. Cranks faster than it ever has. I would check its current draw or have it tested first though. My reman was 230 thats too much to just replace.

Re: Slow Cranking

I heard they were very expensive. I don't have an amp meter but I do have a nice volt meter. Any tips on checking the starter.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Slow Cranking

I pulled mine and took it to AutoZone. They put it on their tester and tested it for free. Most auto parts stores have the capability of testing your starter. At least you would know if it is good or bad.
