I was driving my truck today and noticed that the speedometer and odometer had quit working. I removed the #8 Fuse and it was fried. I replaced the fuse, and they still don't work. Speedo stays on Zero, and there is no readout in the Odometer display. Any ideas?
the speedo gets its signal from the sensor in the top/front of the rear diff - you may want to check out the sensor itself & wiring from it to the cluster to see if something got loose/broken. (red & green wires)
you can test to see if any juice is coming from the speed sensor (its creates voltage- about 5 volts max) to the cluster with a meter but its just a lil involved & possibly dangerous the way I do it with the rear jacked up & the truck running in gear
please post what you find
Cheers

Don't know for certain, but if there is no odometer reading at all, that would indicate no power to the speedometer module. If it was the speed sensor or related wiring, the odometer should still read the last known mileage.
Double check all the fuses, inside and out. I'll look in the book in a bit to see what else is on that circuit, may be a relay involved.
agreed, if the odometer is not on, then you have problems with the wiring or the cluster. I have all the cluster parts you would need, but the odometer is off. PM me if I can help, but first you need to figure out why it is off.
The easiest way would be to get another speedo unit and plug it right in. It does not matter if it has the tach. PM me if you want mine.

How would you test the powersource going into the speedometer assy? I had the trim panel that goes around the speedometer display off over a month ago (the piece that the Wait to Start, etc, is in). Is it possible I loosened something up back there? Again, this was over a month ago, and it has worked fine until today.
The connectors on the bezel aren't part of the speedometer cluster. Still possible something behind came loose. Did you determine why the #8 fuse blew?
I've got the EVTM following me around now. I'll look at the schematics and post if anything helpful jumps out at me...
#8 fuse supplies the "always hot" power to the Speedo module. There is a light green with yellow stripe wire between the two. Odds are tho if that wire had shorted blowing the fuse, it would keep blowing it. More likely something in the speedometer module has blown, but check the wiring and connectors to be sure.
I know this sounds far fetched, but mine did the same thing once after we dropped a bale of hay on the roof, and dented it downward right above the cab's dome light. That light is on the same fuse as your speedo. When I opened up the light by removing the outside cab/box light I could see that the roof had shorted the leads to the dome light. That is exactly what happened. The leads on the Cab Light had shorted and blown the #8 Fuse (I was mistaken that it didn't fix it). Problem solved! That rear cab light can mess up all kinds of stuff!!!
