Starts then dies...

Well this truck never seems to stop baffling me.

Today it died....well at least it starts and dies immediately.
The last couple times I started it prior to its current shenanigans it would "lope" really hard while it warmed up almost chugged like an old 2 cylinder John Deere. and while it was running warm it intermittently would idle rough like it was missing a cylinder. It still pulled hard off idle so I wasn't too concerned. It has always had erratic idle quality so It didn't really throw me untill it started loping and now it wont stay running.

I start it and the engine kicks over and seems to run on all eight for a second and then turns off as if I had just turned the key off. I don't get a CEL and I don't have any type of scan tool so I am kinda flumaxed.

None of my fuses are blown and I have swapped around various relays under the hood hoping this might isolate the issues but no impact.
I cleaned all the connections to the VC's the IPR and ICP and the CPS no effect.

I would say it is the IDM but the truck does start for a second then cuts off and from what I have been told the IDM fails completely and then throws a CEL with no intermediate operation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rob

check out the replies to the post from cjjohnson3006. His post is just a couple above yours on the list.

I personally think its your cam position sensor, but realbadlarry has another Idea that you may want to check out.

There are two kinds of cam sensors; The ones which have gone out, and the ones which are going to go out. Sometimes they just kill the engine, and sometimes it does just what yours is doing, run and die, run and die.

Well I replaced the CPS and no fix. Still starts then dies.
I am going to take my IDM over to a friend and see if his truck exhibits the same behavior as mine.

Thanks
Rob

Well that was a wash...his truck started up and ran normally with my IDM....
Think I am going to test for voltage on the IPR and maybe pull it out if need be.

type truck dies in the search. You will get some good places to start looking. There are a few people having the same problem.

I had same problem, ended up replacing the IPR. Also had to clean the chip and PCM service port contacts where the chip plugs in.

Rob,

Any luck?

I'm back to square one, with the new IPR it's dying again.

Hoping you found something.

Rob

None yet, though I haven't replaced the IPR.
I did clean the contacts for the PCM and IDM but no affect.

I ran the search that was suggested above and found some guys talking about the IPR electrical connection being distorted and mine is ...so I need to go talk to ford and see if I can buy a new connection for it.

I am also going to break down and buy a copy of Autoenginuity software. I am getting really pissed not knowing what is actually happening in the motor when I know something like that will offer the oportunity.

BTW I tried to access your photo links and they don't work. The Flikr website says that they are not accessable.

I have a friend who had his cps go out on him. He figured it out by robbing one off of another truck temporarily. When he bought a new one from AutoZone, he continued to have the same problem. So he purchased a Ford Factory CPS (costs more), and he hasn't had a problem since.

Hope this helps...

I appreciate that. I did buy a new cps from ford and it had no impact.

I also just bought the IPR O-ring kit and have removed most of the interference in order to remove the IPR only problem is I don't have any device to suck the oil out of the resevoir. Anyone figure out an ingenious way of doing so?

Thanks
Rob

Get the oil out of the reservoir....turkey baster with a 6" piece of surgical tubing on the end. Takes a while but no mess.

This isn't ingenious and i posted my method awhile ago... i use a electric fuel pump i bought from a wrecking yard...just put alligator clamps on the leads...one to ground one to battery positive...let the pump do the work.

The second time I pulled mine to put the new one in I just pulled the old one and stuck the new one in really quick. Keep the oil plug on top of the HPOP closed. There is enough vaccum that only a small amount of oil comes out in the short time required to swap in the new one. Worked for me.
