Strong exhaust fumes at idle

Truck is giving off very 'strong' exhaust fumes when idling these days.

I guess a better term would be 'rich'.

Any problem that this may be a symptom of????

Thanks
Hud

Re: Strong exhaust fumes at idle

Mine started doing the same thing at about 100k, now I have 175k and have not figured the problem out yet. I get some smoke when I start it when temps are below 40*, I think its from low cylinder temps, I plugged my truck in last night and the night before and when I fired it up there was no smoke, overnight temps were about 15*.

I have changed injectors, glow plugs, relay, etc and nothing has cured the problem. Alot of guys will say its normal, I dont think so because if it was, it would have done it the first 100k. Good Luck

Frank

My brakes have gotten a little better since I install new front pads from the NAPA severe duty pads, but I still have not been able to work on my truck. I had 12 days off during the holidays and worked on my house finishing my upstairs (well, starting to finish )I didnt even have a chance to wash my truck .

As far as the rich smell, I to changed my ipr, map, eot sensor. By the time I figure it out, the engine might be worn out , I still have not performed a compression check, but the engine runs fine and has plenty of power and doesnt use a drop of oil. I did notice recently, when the engine is up to temp the exhaust smells good, no rich smell, but to keep it up to temp I had to install a grill cover and remove the fan. I have to tow a boat on Sunday, temps will be in the low 40's and the boat is about 8500lbs so I will see how the temps are with the fan off and the grill covered. At work we have a stock 97 with 125k on it and the exhaust smells perfect, no rich smell at all, this is the truck that I have been borrowing known good sensors from . Good Luck

Frank

Re: Strong exhaust fumes at idle

Mine smells like crap too, i was going to post something today actually! I'm reading over things...seems like mine might be injector O rings (been looking at getting DIY injectors anyways, would be a good excuse to pop em out and take a look) and also the IPR, I leak a bit of oil and need to check over everything and see where it's all coming from, may be IPR orings? Hopefully not fuelpump...seems thats a big pain in the butt

a couple weeks ago i changed to a 203 tstat and that made mine smell a lot better, not that that was for sure the cause of the stink but it did a good job covering it

I realize most of you guys are Ford men but i am having an issue with my 04 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. I have smoke coming from the exhaust even just sitting at idle. It has that "rich" fuel smell to it. Ive read a couple of forums and i keep hearing that this could be an injector problem. I did however recently have a code pop up "fuel rail system" when i scanned the check engine light. Well the check engine light went off, yet i am still having smoke constantly out the exhaust. Seems you guys are having the same issue so i was wondering if any of you were able to figure out the issue????

When I bought my truck , it stunk like that also , within a week or two , the IPR crapped out . The new one for some reason ,took away the odor also ...

All you guys need to check your IPR's HPOP's, and fuel pumps, injectors are loading up because of low pressure at idle, the one with the 6.6 duramax, you may have an injection problem like the old 6.2 and 6.5 diesels.

@kwcat
I ended up taking it to the dealership, and from their diagnosis it is the injectors.
