While accelerating gentle from a stop light last night my truck developed a terrible noise. The closest thing I can compare it to would be a blown or missing spark plug on a gas burner. There is no metallic element, it mostly sounds like rushing air.
The truck is shaking terribly and my friend says you can feel it in the ground it is so harsh. It is a definitely not a bottom end noise.
Any ideas? thoughts? experience?
The only thing that has gone through my mind is the possibility of a broken glow plug. The truck is parked for now waiting on me to have time to tear into it.
Can you hear it through the air filter? If so I vote for pushrod

well, you guys were spot on... except it is broken too.
Seems as though it has been bent for some time and wore almost through on the sheet metal guide before it broke off. I now have the additional 2" or floating around in the valley. Pictures to follow of the broken push rod.
Any tips or tricks for getting the broken piece out without pulling the head?
Are there aftermarket push rods I should buy? Should I just replace all 16?
is the chunk of pushrod hurting anything if I were to leave it? not something I exactly want to do but... it sounds better than pulling the head and manifold in someways.
is the lifter likely hurt? it looks OK no scarring visible yet.
Ouch! What did it do to the rocker? Look it over real close for a crack, there have been several that bent pushrods and cracked the rocker arm at the same time.
Got everything torn apart this weekend and found a bad glow plug and melted harness and plugs on the harness for the injectors/glowplugs. Parts on for that too. Also found another pushrod with scarring, but its not bent so thats pretty confusing.
Any idea why the pushrods bend? is this a common problem? I am replacing all them while I am at it. The rockers look fine.
