thermostat, water, leaking issues...

Aloha Folks,

about 1 1/2 years ago I installed a new water pump. At the same time I replaced the thermostat housing and the t-stat with one of those 205 ones. Well, I think the seal between the housing and the top of the water pump has sprung a little leak.

I did not see a big difference in having the 205F and it seemed more problematic to me just in terms of it mating well so as to not have any leaks.

I am thinking about replacing the t-stat now and wanted to ask you which one you would recommend? The Ford one which I believe runs at 192F or something else that will replace the original stock one and not have the issues that the 205 one has.

Thank you as always.
Mahalo!

I had the same problem as you.. My old t-stat was still good an all but it was leakin, So when I went in to fix the leak, I just put a new 195* one back in my truck and sealed it with some good gasket maker stuff.. No leaks so far.

Aloha Folks-
thanks for your replies. I just want something here that I do not have to mess with too often and works and is reliable. I would love to spend more time on other things like installing a Tony W. Chip!

Did you get your 195* T-stat from an auto parts store?
Mahalo,
Kyle

The Ford / Motorcraft stat has the seal integrated on the stat. Much easier. Get a new housing too. They are hard to reuse. I got some allen head bolts to replace the OE ones. Allot easier to install. Take it easy and don't over torque the housing. Use an inch pound torque wrench if can get ahold of one.

As a suggestion you might want to put a goodly amount of anti-seize on the bolts prior to install, then they will not seize and twist off in the housing next time round...

X2 on the anti seize. I'll check that bolt. It is metric.

The bolt has a 5mm allen head. Not sure what equates to as far bolt size and thread pitch.

Aloha Pete-
Thank you for mentioning the new Ford Thermostat for our vehicles and how they have the integrated seal on them so that I do not have to use the separate seal/gasket on top of a thermostat without that integrated rubber seal.

Have that same issue, I installed a new t-stat, gasket, and housing(outlet pipe off the top of the pump). Now it is leaking. Should I use some silicon gasket stuff or just buy all new at Ford? The parts I just bought are from Napa. What are the torque specs for the three bolts? Man, weather changes and new problems arise, got to love it. Thanks for any input.

If you didn't get a new housing you'll probably need one. The Ford / Motorcraft thermy is the way to go. The torque spec is 15 ft lbs.

Had the same problem. Went and grabed some watterpump gasket maker. Put a thin line on put everything back togeather but did not tighten just snug. Let it sit for 1/2 hour then tightened. No more leak.
