About 4 weeks ago while driving my 96 F-350 Crew Cab Dually, at about 57-60 mph I feel my transmission shift as if it has just started up an encline. The torque converter locks up and then unlocks intermittantly and then again at 70 mph. All of a sudden last Saturday, my truck just died in the garage and wouldn't crank. I had it hauled to my mechanic and found out that both batteries were toast and so was the alternator. I got it all back tonight and took it down the road and all seemed fine with the batteries and new alternator, but then the transmission locked up and then unlocked at 60 mph. I called my mechanic, who then called another mechanic friend of his and asked if he had experienced this type of problem. He replied that yes, he had seen this type of problem on the 96 and that it could be something with the ABS system, some sensor, or even the brake lights on the truck causing some type of noise issues. Has anyone else ever had issues of this type with their 96-97 truck. Please help!

I had this problem too, and checked everything, bulbs, sockets, grounds throughout the truck, everything, and still had the TC cycling; it also would kick off the cruise control when I hit the turn signal... I was getting "crosstalk" at the turn signals vs brake lights, too. I was tearing my hair out trying to find the problem when a friend who worked on school buses for years said that every time they had wiring issues that wierd, it turned out to be a ground. At that, I snipped off the ground lead near the four rear bulb sockets and spliced a short wire to the bolt which attaches the tailgate bumper to the bed after confirming good ground at that bolt. Also welded a bolt to the frame below the crack at cab-bed and added a ground strap from cab-frame-bed. Replaced taillight bulbs and YAHOO no more issues. Taillights are way brighter and everything works. Spent days puzzled over what became a <1hr repair... good luck with yours.

I had the same problem as well and found the third brakelight burned black, however that did not cure the problem. On mine the problem was the multifunction switch (turn signals, hazard, windshild washers ect). I hooked a scanner up to the truck and watched it as the problem occured and every time the torque converter would unlock, the scanner would indicate "brakes applied". Voltage leaks through the contacts, I think due to the crappy green colored grease they used, and tricks the PCM into thinking the brakes are applied and also flashes the third brake lamp on/off causing it to burn out.
