Tow ratings 97 F-250

Looking at my 97 owners manual for my F-250HD 4x4 AT MBRP 4" turbo-back,AFE Stage 2 and Superchips programmer. I see that all of the info say's nothing about fifth-wheel application. The ratings are what I believe to be convention tag style towing. I'm running all synth.throughout,3.55 gear and don't want to get new truck at this time. I know I can pull something in the 14,000-16000lbs range but from a legal stand point am I screwing up? The question is can it stop? Is there information pertaining to fifth-wheel application somewhere I don't know about? The coventional ratings can't be the same! Opinions? advice? what would you do?....................Boatracer95

You might get better response down in the towing and hauling section of the forum.

Cheers,

wel my truck is only rated to tow 9800lbs,thats supercab, with 3.55's and a 5 speed.i think that is a good number to stick to,i think they rate them by the weakest component in the drivetrain.besides 14k-16k is alot of weight,i think our trucks in stock form will pull it on level ground at highway speeds but any grades and you would prolly be doin around 40-45mph max with egts sky high.not to easy of a pull.goodluck

I forgot to say I have a supercab. As far as being heavy with a fifth-wheel it tows a bit different. I have friends that have 6.0's that are F-250 and thier data indicates that they are in the safe range to pull a 14,000 trailer or so. I've pulled a 10,000 pound offshore boat with no troubles but that was conventional towing. I'm purchasing a 5'er and checked my manual and can't find any indication of fifth-wheel or conventional differentiation. I just don't want to get busted in any way! Heck I don't really like the newer superduties, Got my truck like I want it...........................Boatracer95

GVWR 8800 lbs.
GCWR 20,000 lbs (I think)
I have the same truck but it is a 96 and the GCWR is only 16000 lbs.

Use your head and pay attention to the GAWR's and your tire ratings and you should be fine.
