I was looking at a 98 f150 ex cab with 138,000 miles on a 5.4, the car dealer said my truck wasnt worth more than 2,500. Please tell me thats not right.

Sounds like that dealer wants to make a lot of cash from your truck. In my experience, selling private is the only way to make reasonable cash.

Kelly shows it in excellent condition with no mods (trade in you usually don't get anything for them) at just over $3000 if yours is a regular cab.
Private party sale shows at $4905 in excellent condition without the mods. You would probably be significantly better off to sell it yourself. If you find the right buyer the mods can help.

OK - judging by your screen name it is not a regular cab. Assuming a crew cab Kelly Blue book shows $3725 in excellent condition or $3375 in good condition for trade in value with no mods.
Private party sale price shows $5680 excellent and $5255 good condition, you would still probably benefit by selling yourself.
