Transmission Temp

I just finished installing gauges (autometer ultra-lites) this afternoon and was wondering what is normal operating temp for the E4OD? If I remember correct it should be around 210-220. Here is the problem; My gauge will creep all the way up to 250-255 under normal driving conditions. Thinking maybe my gauge or sending unit was faulty I slaved in a autometer water temp gauge (100-250) and sending unit using new wires and the temp stays the same. The fluid level is full and only has about 10k miles on it. Is there a problem with my transmission? What would cause this? Thanks in advance

Re: Transmission Temp

Way too hot for me!!
You are going to have to install a larger cooler, the stock one sucks.
I use the Tru Cooler 4590 and see normal driving temps in the 160 range.
I would be concerned if after adding a large cooler you still have temps that high.

Re: Transmission Temp

I think your temps are unloaded right?, anyway I think are to high. you should check if your tranny cooler is not clogged, or better way upgrade it with a bigger one.

Re: Transmission Temp

where did you locate the sender?

generally 100 deg over ambient temp is normal.

Re: Transmission Temp

I located it just above the pan on drivers side where the factory plug is installed. I will definitely be ordering a bigger cooler ASAP. Thanks

Re: Transmission Temp

that plug doesnt give a 100% accurate reading of the fluid temp. the best way to do it is get a kit or a shop to install the sending unit in the cooler lines. you'd be suprised what a differnce you see, and how much quicker you see it. i would say if your gauage is reading that temp in the factory plug on the side of the tranny, your actual fluid temps could be even hotter. when i had my tranny done i had them put one in the hot side and one on the cool side coming out of the cooler. im yet to hook up another guage on the hot side though. but yes as stated before, those temps seem way too high, i would hate to see what they get to pulling any weight or sitting in traffic. aftermarket tranny coolers are fairly cheap and pretty easy to install, i would definitely look into one. good luck.

Re: Transmission Temp

After looking around at various Tranny Temp Gauges (Autometer).... I was surprised at the cost.....why the $130 cost for these???

Is there a decent gauge that doesn't cost $130?

Re: Transmission Temp

I have a Norsdog trans. temp guage that was around 80 dollars if I remember right. It's been a few years ago.

Re: Transmission Temp

I talked to the autometer tech this morning and he said @ 250 degrees I should have 65 ohms and I had 500 so he is sending me a new one. Hopefully this will take care of it. On a funny note out of curiosity I stuck a turkey thermometer in the hole and it read about 140-150. I know this is not a accurate reading but I think if it was in fact 250 degrees in there it would have registered more. Oh well, I will know soon enough when the new sender gets here. Thanks
