Turbo interchangeability??

I just bought a 95 F250 PSD, it has an awful noise at idle, it goes away when the RPM is increased. With the help of some better ears than mine it looks like the bearings in the turbo are shot. Can I install a turbo from a 99 model year truck? Any and all help would be appreciated.

Re: Turbo interchangeability??

I don't think a turbo from...at least a late '99, will fit our current pedestal!
There have been indications on previous posts, that you can buy a rebuild kit for our turbos, and I believe it is a fairly economical upgrade.

Most aftermarket turbo's (for our early trucks) need a fair bit of modification, or exchange of parts, thus making the whole process alot more expensive, compared to a rebuild of your current turbo.

I thought I read that you could get the kits from SWAMPs .

Also, this Turbo Removal link from SWAMP's site may be helpful.

Re: Turbo interchangeability??

You would probably be ahead if you just rebuilt your turbo. That way, you wouldn't have to buy a new pedestal or a turbo. Besides, our turbos are better than what comes on the superduties.

Sounds like what I am going through! I had a loss of power at low rpm's and a sound at low rpm's that I thought was a sticking cooling fan clutch. One afternoon I popped the hood with the engine running and had my daughter turn the ignition off. Hearing the turbo spool down sounded like fingernails on a chalk board. Had been thinking about a turbo upgrade for some time now & I finially found justification!
