Newbie here.
Truck is a 97 F-350, 140K. 4" turbo back, S&B CI - no chip and no other mods
I am trying to figure out how to disconnect the 42 pin connector so that I can OHM test the injector wires in bank 2 from the IDM to the 42 Pin - at the end of the day, I'm worried I'm going to break it and I have enough problems with that whole bank not working. Having spent the last hour or so trying to find an answer, all I've come up with is what to do once you have it disconnected. Any help is much appreciated.
There's a 10mm bolt in the center of the body end of the connector. Unscrew that and the connector comes apart. The bolt is fairly long, so you have to crank on it for a while.
+1 when you're backing the bolt out it should pull the connector out with it as long as the retaining ring is still in place. Sometimes once the bolt is all the way backed out it takes just a little wiggle and pull and it'll come right out
A quick check you can do if you are loosing one bank of injectors is to just check the valve cover gaskets pass through wiring.
It is the weak link and if nothing has been done with them you could very likely have burnt pins that are causing the IDM to shut down that bank of injectors.
I actually started there. My AE gives me a P1294 code so I Ohm tested both banks since I had the tester out anyway. I used the pigtails from the new UVCH, plugged them into the old UVCH and teste the wires. Passenger side was fine, drivers side wasn't I changed out that thinking it would solve the problem. Went to start it up and same issue same code. I figure I will check at the 42 pin connector to see what's happening there. I've also read that the IDM may just be bad causing the high side open code and shutting down the drivers side bank. The funny thing about this whole deal is I was sitting at a red light next to a convertible with the top down, my passenger window down so my dog could get some fresh air. 7.3s are loud to begin with but as I was sitting there, the left bank went down and it was funny to see the look on the faces as I tried to pull away from the light .
Well the injector sockets in the harness all OHM tested within spec. It would appear my problem is either the IDM or the connections from the IDM to the 42 pin connector. Thanks again for all your help!
The 42 pin connector body has been used on bunches of Ford engine harnesses for years. The bodies are the same between different models, with some slight mounting differences. I've built an injector cutout box using a 42 pin connector body from an Explorer (don't recall the year) which was located up near the firewall near the center of the hood.
My only issue was it didn't answer the OP's question about how to disconnect it.
