Yesterday morning I was putting a can of R134 in the A/C and the motor was running normally. As it was taking the freon it started running real rough, it was loping like it had a racing cam in it. After I took the guages off I got in the cab and gave it a little fuel. It smoothed out some, but when I pushed the diesel pedal to the floor it would only go up to about 2400 rpms. When I let off of the pedal it shut off, then when I tried to crank it it sounded like I had hit it with a shot of ether but would not fire up. The tack was moving while cranking it, so I know it isn't the CPS.
I am thinking it might be the valve cover connectors, but I would value any input from those of you who know way more about these motors than I do.
Thanks in advance.
PS - My daughter's boyfriend hooked his scanner to it and did not read any codes.
It could be a valvecover connection, but that will usually shut down the whole bank of cylinders on that side and throw a code to boot. You can visually inspect the outer connections and smell the oil cap for a burnt wiring smell for a possible under the valvecover short. Also check the fuel bowl wiring harness (especially the wiring to the IPR) since that can sometimes get funky with diesel on the wiring insulation (turns it to goo). Also check your main oil level. When my injector o-rings failed catastrophically, I used 8 quarts in 150 miles (right after an oil change) and it ran just like a burned valvecover connection (before it quit running altogether). I never thought to look at that since I had just changed it! Cheers!
Thanks, Patrick. I will check the fuel system and the oil when I get home.
I can't believe that after 65 views you are the only one that has replied. I have posted problems before and in a couple of hours you have more info than you can shake a stick at. Either this site has lost a bunch of posters or there aren't too many of us OBS folks still around.

Were you leaning on anything while working on the Air ?...
as far as the site ,,things are very different here now ,,,
It may have been 64 bots,& 1 member,,,, looking at the thread ...
Alot of the knowledge here was made to feel unappreaciated ,(new owner),so they left ...
It also helps when you post "this is what I have already checked to no avail"
It could be 5-10 different things that may have gone wrong ,Patrick got you started ,,let us know what you find out ....

I took Patrick's advice and checked the oil when I got home. It was down about 5 quarts. I have only driven it about 2500 miles since the last oil change, so if I ever get it started I will have to figure out where all of the oil has gone. I checked the fuel filter bowl and it had fuel in it and the filter did not look too bad at all.
Anyway, after I filled it with oil I tried to start it. It will spin over, yes the tach is moving, and after about 20 seconds it tries to fire up but it just won't get there. It is getting fuel because it will puff out white smoke while turning over and then when it tries to fire a big puff of white smoke comes out. I have drained the batteries trying to start it so now they are charging.
Action4478-no I wasn't leaning on anything while working on the air. I have been a lurker for a long time on this site. Up until now I only had one or two other problems with this truck, but I always got plenty of good advice when I asked for it.
After I posted this thread originally I thought about changing the title but I guess I was too late and it wouldn't let me.
When I got home yesterday I started cranking to no avail. I would crank it for 10-15 seconds then wait the same then crank again. When the batteries started slowing down I put them on the charger for 30 minutes then cranked some more. I have a charger that adds a 200 amp boost, even used it to make sure I could spin the motor fast enough. Nothing doing. A couple of times it would act like it was going to catch and fire up but it just wouldn't get there.
I have the glow plug regulator disconnected and I am going to try shooting some ether in while cranking just to see if I can get it going at all.
Anyone have any other ideas?
If you were that low ,,you may have an injector o ring problem ,,,odd that it would happen suddenly though
If you can get a scanner ,read ICP pressure & IPR DC% while cranking ....

I had my daughter's fiance spray starter fluid in the intake while I cranked it this afternoon and that did the trick. I had to get it running some to get oil pumped back in to the high pressure rails then it ran very rough on diesel before finally smoothing out and running on it's own. I believe the oil is leaking at the sensor that you do the 10k mod, whatever it is called. It had a lot of oil on the plug and inside of it, we cleaned it up before we tried to crank it, too. I guess it is allowing oil to come out of it and then it drains into the valley and down the back of the block.
