White/Blue Smoke at Startup, Coolant Consumption, Exhaust in Cab

My 1995 F250 Diesel is smoking on startup and my neighbors are not happy
  • I replaced the Fuel Injector sleeves a year ago - they had no signs of cracking
  • I replaced all the seals on the fuel injectors
  • the smoke does not smell like coolant... it smells almost like jet-fuel.

Several years ago I disconnected the EGR system (I only disconnected the electrical terminal). I will re-connect it to see if this makes any difference.

Is there any reference materials that describe the systems that coolant flows though and how to check them. I realize it could be a head gasket, but if it is not that is a lot of work and $$$ for nothing.

Any input would be appreciated (please and thank you!)

Pretty sure a 95 PSD doesn't have an EGR system.

My 95 does this too. Do you have a block heater on your truck? My truck would really only blow smoke when it was cold. Plugging in the block heater stopped the smoke with just that little bit of help.

Also, My EGR is disconnected as well. From what I've learned from others, that valve on the turbo closes to lower emissions and help the engine heat up quicker. I like mine disconnected because the turbo seems to work better. I'll deal with the morning smoke.

As far as the smoke in your cab, do you have an after market air intake? If so, your crank case breather might be blowing directly into your engine compartment instead of being plumbed into the air intake (which is what the stock intake did). Again, this is how my truck is set up. I don't want that dirty smoke air going into my engine (I've read that it destroys silicone seal in your engine). You can always attach a hose to the crank case breather to direct it out to the bottom of the engine.

The Exhaust Back Pressure valve is not an emissions system It is only there like the heat riser in a gass engine to hold exhaust heat to help warm a cold engine. It works off engine oil pressure using an electrio valve. When you unplug the connector you disable it from cycling closed. This caused loss of power on some trucks when you take off on a cold morning before the engine was fully up to temp. The EPBV would cycle shut even when driving till the engine was warm. Setting at idle with it shut creates a hiss type exhaust sound.

It is common for a 7.3L to puff white/ blue-ish smoke when cold as long as it clears up once warm.

Having exhaust in the cab would mean the up pipe gaskets are bad and the extra back pressure when the EBPV is closed is forcing exhaust out under the hood and into the cab.
