ZF5 Lubrication, Cheaper

I was just reading the front page on the troubleshooting on the ZF website and I noticed the lubrication. They are saying that Transynd is a good fluid for the diesel spec transmission. It ought to be much cheaper than most anything out there, and is fully rated too (I shy away from Amsoil and the like)

Transynd is an Allison spec made by Castrol. It is a full synthetic ATF that is to be used in Allison automatics for some very extended drain intervals. The Castrol used to be the only choice but now there are several other manufacturers making it, according to an Allison rep. I don't know where to find a list but Allison has the spec so if a reputable manufacturer claims to meet it, it's probably good.

The International dealer would be a good place to start looking for this stuff if you are so inclined. Lots of MDs are coming with automatics these days.

For what it's worth I wound up with Motorcraft full synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid in mine, 4 qts through the shifter hole and it is not much different than it ever was....

Re: ZF5 Lubrication, Cheaper

I changed the factory oil out of My ZF-5 around 150,000 miles. I was SHOCKED & AMAZED how easy it shifted after the change, for a while. I changed it about a year ago again, around 100,000-120,000 miles, and it didn't shift much different this time. I used Amsoil Universal ATF. Place 4 miles from the house has it on the shelf. When I read what You used I thought You used the $26 a QUART Synthetic ATF..... I picked that up off the shelf when I was getting parts for the first oil change..... Parts Guy had to pick Me up off the floor when He told Me how much it cost.....I fell off the stool!

Re: ZF5 Lubrication, Cheaper

The MTL wasnt $26 a quart but it was darn expensive anyway. I was too dense to figure it out at the time so now it is in my transmission. But I will be using the Transynd next time.
