1995 timing cover mod to work with newer HPOP without drainback issues

I thought I would post this for those that are interested.

This mod is for those of us with 1994 and 1995 strokes that want to install a new SD HPOP. Most of us that have done this have experienced HPOP reservoir drain back issues that result in hard starts after 2 or more days. One way to fix this is to modfiy the existing 1994 or 1995 timing cover to work with a new HPOP reservoir from a 1996 or newer engine.

The HOW_TO can be seen here

I will try to update any errors I find and add part numbers if I can as time goes by.

Special thanks to Rich (95F450SD) who was behind the original idea.

Good luck everyone!

radar--when you drill thru--shavings inside engine????? know how to stop it--hook up vacuum cleaner to engine--with the pressure side of the vacuum cleaner--can do this with a lot of them--wont have tons of pressure--but when drill thru--will blow chips out the hole--be sure to wear glasses!!!!!!!!!!! hook it to the oil fill hole--or have someone hold the hose over that spot when just about to punch thru-----

Re: 1995 timing cover mod to work with newer HPOP without drainback issues

Yep......And also get yerself a can of old fashioned aerosol shaving cream.

Once you have your rags inplace, spray in a nice layer of shaving cream....The foam will catch all the metal shavings and trap them like glue....it is really easy if you first tie some strong thread or thin string to each rag and use it to pull the rags up thru the shaving cream as you remove them.

Use the shaving cream trick if you ever need to rethread a spark plug hole on gas engine. Just make sure the piston is all the way down, then fill the cylinder with shaving cream...when you are thru tapping the hole, just rotate the engine by hand and the piston will push all the foam and metal fragments up and out the spark plug hole...Any residual cream left in the cylinder is rendered harmless with a squirt of WD40 or similar.

Re: 1995 timing cover mod to work with newer HPOP without drainback issues

Actually, the cavity that we are drilling into does not go into the engine. It opens back to the valley where the HPOP sat.

Thanks for the idea tho. I may just add that or the shaving cream to the instructions.

Re: 1995 timing cover mod to work with newer HPOP without drainback issues

Looks great, one question though (for now). Would it be feasible to tap for a 1/8 NPT pipe plug instead of using a self-tapping screw? That should seal much better without silicone sealant?

Okay, two questions.... How much injector would this SD pump handle? Would it let me run a 160 cc on a fairly aggressive chip without throwing a CEL??

I think that the 1/8 NTP plug would work great. I just did not do it because I did not think of it.

Regarding the SD HPOP, it is a crap shoot because some HPOP's are better than others of the same part number. Depends on the internal clearances I guess. BUT.. in general, I have heard that -most- people with SD HPOP's are running just fine without CEL's, myself included. I have held the pedal to the metal up a long grade in the extreme setting running 35+ PSI boost for over 20 seconds without any CEL and my injectors are 170cc's.

I've plugged that hole in the timing cover and still have the drain back problem only now it's getting worse and I'm having a really hard time just starting it. I've checked every thing I can and every thing I've read on here and can't find any thing wrong. It's almost like the HPO res. isn't filling at all.

Hey, have you guys talked to Joey at Terminator? He is now turning the *15 pumps into *17 without having the drain back problem. He can put the *17 pump into the *15 case. I just wonder if any of you knew this or not??
