how do you tell the difference? I keep reading all these different things on here and I don't follow any of it at all.

Look here: DSCF2022

The bottom is the 96 and up one that you want. Note the extra hole in the bottom of the housing. That is the 'standpipe' that you are drilling the hole in the cover to match up with.
