Hey my powerstroke friends, I discovered something great. I don't know if it is already well known but I found a 3 quart oil filter that fits a powerstroke perfectly! that's right, 3 Quarts! Its either of these: Donaldson P554105 or Fleetguard 691.
I work the mechanics graveyard shift at a TA truck stop. things can get really slow some times. I am always around huge 1 gallon oil filters and I have been trying to find a way to use one of these monsters on my 97 stroker.
It was slow, so I removed my oil filter and took it in the back. I compared thread sizes and width with the monster oil filters. All caterpiller filters that we carry had matching threads! I found the longest filter that still fit the very tight clearance against the oil pan that powerstroke filters have, and it works like a charm! filters are around $17 and all truck stops carry these very common filters. hope this helps! I'd like to get some feedback or pros and cons! thanks guys.

If the micron size of the filtration is smaller than ours then the slowing down of the oil through the filter will help it to capture more dirt and soot thus letting us run the oil longer. It might make economic sense to do it.

I actually find this post veryinteresting, I was kinda starting to get tired of the same things being repeated repetively. I just looked the LF691 filter up on fleetguards sight. It appears that there are even two BETTER filters to use. The LF691 is your standard Cellulose media. You can upgrade to LF3374 which is the same filter but with the BETTER Stratapore media. Finally thereis the LF9691 which is the combination Statapore full flow & stacked disc venturi style bypass. Of course this is assuming that there end up being NO issues using these oversized filters.

Some more info from fleetguard. The sixe specs for the standard filter are:
Part: LF3630
Manufacturer: FLEETGUARD
Part Type: Lube, Full-Flow Spin-On
Overall Height: 206.3 mm (8.122 in)
Largest OD: 108.36 mm (4.266 in)
Thread Size: 1 1/2-16 UN-2B
The size specs for the potential oversized filter are:
Part: LF691
Manufacturer: FLEETGUARD
Part Type: Lube, Full-Flow Spin-On
Largest OD: 120.27 mm (4.735 in)
Overall Height: 287.27 mm (11.31 in)
Thread Size: 1 1/2-16 UNS-2B
With the Diameter being over 1/2 wider, I wonder if the rubber gasket has enough seating surface for long term use instead of just a quick fitment. I figure that is something to consider.

NO PROBLEMS at all, just takes a bit larger filter wrench. I bought a case of them on ebay, but when they're gone I plan on moving up to the stratopore version.
That's good to know that they work long term...I do notice that you have signs of seapge on your filter though. Are you not going as tight as required to stop seapage or you can't get it to seal completely?

BlueMule,
Have you done any oil analysis and if so did it extend your oil change interval? What else have you learned?????
Grace us with your knowledge oh wise one

I do send my oil out for analysis on a regular basis, BUT I also use synthetic oil and an Amsoil bypass filter. I had just a bit over 30,000 on the oil when I last changed it. The Amsoil filter and Mobil D1 gets the credit for that.
K-D tools makes a wrench thats fits the big filter.K-D #2321
As long as the filter fits, and BLUEMULE has proven that, and it doesn't leak, also proven (seepage accepted) we've got several advantages of making this switch:
1. more oil capacity means cooler oil = good.
2. more filter media means longer life = good.
3. the choice of several filter medias = nice.
4. the fact that one maybe just as good media wise as the FL1995 but available on line for $4.50? = TOTALLY EXCELLENT.
(now is that $4.50 filter infact as good or even better than stock?)

Ooops......Sorry Guys I was looking at the wrong filter # I saw 51772 and thought it was 51722. Wix does make one to fit but its not listed on that site.
