Power Strokes 1994-1997 Upgrades and AftermarketUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1994-1997 Ford F-Series with Power Stroke engine.
There is a guy here in town that knows his sh*t about diesel's. well i talked to him yesterday and he told me he would put a cold air intake, gutt the EBPV (abbrevation?), up my boost to max, and clean my FPR for $370. Im thinking of letting him do it but im not sure if this is a good deal. i think it is with all the labor required.
he also said with the EBPV removed (the butterfly thing), the turbo will always stayed spooled up so say im going 30MPH but let off because im going thru town, he said when i push the throttle again it will automatically jump since turbo is already spooled. is this bad on ANYTHING? i do not want ANYTHING to hurt my new tranny of my 100k motor.
It's not worth it to me!! $125 or there abouts for a TYMAR air intake, $00.50 for a cap to gut the EBPV. The cost of a "BB" to shim the FPR, about $126 total. As far as the turbo spooling...it's spinning at idle with the EBPV, but not spooled up making boost nor will it if the EBPV is gutted. There is no way "up the boost to max" on the early trucks as there is no waste gate or pop off valve to adjust. Save some of your money and buy a down pipe next after the intake, then gages and then a good chip, preferably a flip chip. that will give you the biggest bang for the buck. Do a search using Renegade as the user name on exhausts, he did a 4" exhaust for less than $200 from local parts houses, he listed the part numbers too. So for less than the $370 you can have the intake, EBPV gutted, FPR shimed, and a 4" exhaust...another $150 and you have a down pipe too. Some of the sponsers may have exhaust package deals with the down pipe and exhaust for an attractive price...check them too.

Figure 145 for intake if you buy a kit, that leaves 230 or labor. @ 65 per hour thats 3.5 hours. May be a little long on the hours.
As for as hurting anything, no.
As far as turbo staying spooled up, not in my opinion. You are reducing backpressure which helps the EGT's via better exhaust flow. I do not think gutting the EBPV will make any noticable difference in spool up, just temps.
How does he plan to "Up Your Boost to Max"?
Cleaning the FPR, good routine maintenance item to do on any PSD (that has stock fuel system).
So is 370 a good deal, not in my opinion.
Now tell him to include labor for installing down pipe and you got a deal.

thats the thing, i do not have the patience nor the time nor the diesel experience (i can completely rebuild a gasoline) so if someone is local around here that can do that for a cheaper price, give me a shout.
im looking to sell the truck so not invest much, but want some more throttle response.
HELLLLLLLLLLLLL NOOOOOOOOOOO man thats less than $100 in parts!!I hate people like that! Trust me I know EXACTLY how it is, im 19, man, so many people TRY to do that kind of crap to me.
"Cold" Air Intake (open element airfliter and pipe) close to $60
4/40 allen head capscrew with 1 brass nut. $.10 (better than the BB)
Gutting the EBPV $2.00 (the cost of 1 4in cut off wheel or you can use a drimmel tool...
Freeze plug for ebpv $.10
Compressed air to clean the FPR Screen(i use carb cleaner for it, but you MUST let it thouroghly dr before reinstalling it, compressed air will work!
Hell you can even through in a 10k resistor in you HPOP(high pressure oil pump) to give a little better throttle response! Cost, about $.10 @ radio shack.
Total $62.32
Labor i would say 2 hours since your a newbie, i can do all this in 45 mins i would think, but i gaurentee it would have takin me 2 hrs the first time i messed with it. Do it yourself, gain the knowlege, trust me ITS USEFULL.
The cost of the air intake this guy is using might be one reason, but i have never seen one for more than about $300 total! Shoot me a pm if you have some more questions. Hell Ill be commin through austin @ the end of september, I can do it for ya and teach ya abunch of little tricks as well!

I am asking $18,000 obo as a working point to neg. on price.
