460/E40D vs. 7.3L E40D

I'm just curious, has anyone had any trouble with the E40D behind a gasser? I hear of a lot of failures behind diesels, but not so much with the gas trucks of that era.

2004 Ford F-250 XL Regular Cab Longbed 4x2, 6.0L PSD/TS Auto, 3.73, stock for now. Tekonsha Prodigy, Curt Mfg. 10k WC/12k WD receiver hitch.

Traded in: 1995 Ford F-250 XLT Super Cab Longbed 4x4, 460, auto, 3.55's., K&N filter, glasspack duals. Miss everything about this truck but the gas mileage....

Some days you're the dog.....Some days you're the hydrant.

E4OD was a pretty good trans.... if you are relying on the internet for anecdotal advice you will hear from most of the unhappy owners and you will hear from none of the happy owners.

The 7.3 and the 6.8 are fairly close in power output (especially considering the E4OD is available behind the 5.4) that I don't think you'll see much difference.

Maintain the transmission properly and avoid abusing it... should be no problem.

This truck is my sixth with the E4OD, and I've never had a problem. However, this is the first diesel I've had, and time will tell if it holds up. So far, about 125,000 and still doing good. I'm installeing a Transgo shift kit and Sonnax valve tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes.

Re: 460/E40D vs. 7.3L E40D

My 1993 Ford E350 van with a 460, E40D with 9000 miles is close to surpassing my 1997 F350 Diesel which got a new E40D under warranty at 9000 miles, so I'd say the gasser lasts better.
