6 speed in OBS?

Has anyone ever done this or do you know if a 6 speed from a SD will fit in our trucks?

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

A couple of people have done it. IIRC the big hurdle is that you need the super duty transfercase as well.

It figures there'd be some sort of road block to make it cost prohibitive.

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

I've never actually looked into the difference in the trans to TC connection to see if anything can be done about it....need to contact advance adaptors......

It's not worth all of that. I'll just do a 5 speed.
Thanks guys

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

It's not that bad if you get a 6-speed and TC together used.

Oh and you gotta relocate the trans crossmember, but seriously, it's not that big of a deal!

The work isn't the issue it's the $$$. I have to figure in the cost of a clutch/flywheel as my truck is automatic now. In my neck of the woods in the rare event that you come across used parts that have the word Diesel any where near them you pay like 10-20% less than new cost.

Then you better figure that in for the 5-speed also. Unless the donor truck already has the SMFW, you will need a complete SMFW LUK replacement assy. Dont waste your time with the stock dual mass flywheel, it will break things. Best case your tailshaft or bell housing, worst case your crankshaft. IOW, you may be able to get the 6-speed with FW and clutch along with the transfer case.

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

I've figured in the luk clutch in the swap. It's the T-case that's the extra expense. Mine t-case works fine, as I mentioned parts like that around here are close to new prices.
I realize I put the clutch/flywheel in the earlier post.

In that case, maybe be a little patient and save up the pennies for the t-case also as long as your AT is holding up. As long as you have to do a conversion, might as well do the best you can. In additon get the upgraded clutch so you can handle future HP upgrades. I would love to have that extra gear, lower 1st, higher OD.

I've often dreamed of finding a wrecked manual 350 SD and taking the whole drivetrain axles and all for my truck, then using the left overs to build an older F truck with a Cummins.

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

Don't forget to figure in the money you can make from selling the stock TC and auto trans. You would be suprised at the amount of people that could use them.

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

Where's the emergency brake on that truck? Isn't it on the tranny in the manual shift (ZF5) trucks?

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

eh? as far as I know, all our trucks have the emergency brake on the same location, in the rear drums.

Re: 6 speed in OBS?

He's thinking of the 88-97 F-Superduties. The parking brake was on the back of the Transmission. Very $$$$ to fix.
