97 TW chip, stage 1 inj.=smoke

Wow I put a TW chip and stage 1 injectors in my 97PSD 5spd 4x4 and on the tow settings all the way up to extreem it smokes when I get into her at all. So much so when the guy behind me can see I am stoped at the next light. She really moves. All of you out there with this set up get the smoke too or is this somthing to worry about. The egt's are fine well below 10, I am driving in town mostly maybe it is loading up a little then I dump it getting out in traffic and it cleans out. I am running on econ mode in town now to see if it helps. I as do all of you LOVE my PSD!
PS smoke is black!!!

AFE intake and a MBRP turbo back exhaust. Turbo is stock. In econ mode it runs with no smoke. I drove it today in econ but didn't bump it up in HP no smoke. How much smoke should I expect to see? My tuner is a 6; high Idle, econ, tow 1, tow 2, race, extreem.

Is yours a 5 speed or auto? Tony is working on a program for me, that should be a good daily driver with less smoke on the bottom end. He has tweaked my programs a few times, as I am really picky. Once I get the chip back, I'll let you know how it does. I have a 5 speed. If you do as well, you could get him to burn the same program to your chip. I will let you know the results of the new program.

Cool. My chip is scheduled to arrive today. If I get a chance to install it, I will certainly let you know my results. The only difference is I have 3.55's and......35" tires. I know, I know, but I don't tow. If this new program helps my smoke, it will certainly make yours better since you aren't under as much of a load taking off.

Jerry,
I have 35's and 3.55's and I live over 8000 feet elevation and it actually tows pretty well. I can easily roll down the highway and up moderate hills with 6000-10,000 pounds in tow and stay in 5th gear. Any big hills I just drop into 4th and it pulls great. I know 4.10's would help but i'm pretty satisfied with how it pulls now.
To the Original Poster, it sounds like your adding a little too much fuel. I would either upgrade your turbo or have Tony reburn your chip. Too much smoke and you're just wasting fuel.

Dave,
I'm a big fan of my 3.55's as well. A little extra shifting in the hills, but cruises great! To combat my similar smoke issue, that the original poster also has, I upgraded to a D66 turbo. This makes the smoke worse on the bottom end and only helps on the top end once the boost is up. I think he and I are in the same boat....we don't want crap loads of smoke on the bottom! I'm tired of feeling like I am single-handedly giving diesels a bad rep! Tony sent me out another program, that fixed the smoke, but unfortunately it also killed any pep. Hopefully he can get this tweaked some more and I will keep this thread posted. I have often considered yanking my Stage 1's and going back to stock with my 75HP burn from Bill. The truck was plenty fast for normal driving and it only smoke a moderate amount if I really got on it. When I went to Stage 1's, EVERYONE assured me I could get a program that would make my truck run like a stock injectored truck with a 75HP burn. I wanted this option as my daily program and then to have the other settings "wake up" the extra capacity of the Stage 1's. All I have seen so far is either all or nothing when it comes to programs. And this is nothing against Tony. He is working with me to get what I want, but shipping these chips back and forth does add up money wise. I have been doing my own programming of my Triumph motorcycle for a few years now, using some awesome software. I really wish I had the money to buy the software and hardware to write my own programs and burn my own chips. Then I could really get exactly what I want. I just can't believe there isn't a tune already out there that gives good power with all the "extra" smoke while running Satge 1's. I'm surely not the first person who has wanted this.......am I?
OKay......I've had toooo much coffee today.......rant off.
Jerry

That is what I am interested in also. A truck that doesn't blow lots of unburned fuel but will burn rubber if I dump it. A little smoke is fine but I don't want itn all the time.

pretty sure the only reliable place to get the D66 is Beans.
If you havent done anything to ur trans yet as far as building it up, do it, cause ur will mess ur tranny up with the path ur traveling down.
U also need to watch out in your tow and extreme modes with the stock turbo, especially if u have a heavy exhaust system, cause u will grenade ur turbo either by the wieght of the exhaust system or the over spooling of the turbo cause of the extra fuel and boost.
Believe me, I killed my tranny with the Edge Evo, sold that went with TW and injectors and killed my turbo, found a cheap stocker turbo as a temp solution, and my exhaust split the center section in two, then i went with the setup I have now and its great, there is some smoke like you said, but the smoke can be cleaned up by a bigger oil pump, which is why im in line for a Pulse.
