A 99.5 hpop is a direct replacement for the one you have. The only differance is the late model is a 17 degree pump and your 96 has a 15 degree swash plate. The new pump will have quik connects for the high pressure oil lines and you will have to remove them and reuse the fittings from your old pump. Everything else is the same, even the gasket.
All the OBS PSD's and the early 99 SD's had the 15* pump. 99.5 and later 7.3's have a 17* pump. And yes, because of the longer stroke they do flow more oil.
with bigger injectors and/or extreme tuned chips the pressure from the pump will drop and throw a check engine light for low pressure. this is just a bandaid til twin pumps.

The drainback issues only are a problem on '95 and older trucks. You will be fine.
If you can get a good deal on a SD pump, go for it. even with stock engine, you will get better throttle response and possibly better (marginally) mileage.

So is there a fix for 95 and older trucks? </div></div>
In the sig of the poster you quoted, he has a diy mod hyper-link for the anti-drain back issue.

Or you can use an external accumulator
Or you can change to the newer front cover. </div></div>
I have been down all three of those roads.
- The timing cover mod is by far the easiest and least expensive. You can do it in about 2 hours. One note, when you make your custom o-ring for the new standpipe, go EASY with the RTV. Too much RTV will push the oring into the standpipe and possibly block it. Yep, did it myself. I should take a picture of the darn thing. Caused a lot of grief trying to trace down a slow leak at the HPOP/timing cover seal. I saved it for posterity and it is sitting on my bench in a prominent spot.
- External accumulator tank. I had some left over stuff from my vette and was going to use it on the truck. Ended up not doing it because I could not locate a good spot for the tank. Good design tho. I have the electronic valve for it as well, just never installed it. Be prepared to spend $300 or more to get-r-done.
Front timing cover. When I pulled my motor, I went ahead and replaced the front timing cover. You have to replace the pan and oil pickup tube as well. Ended up costing me 300 in (used) parts. This is the best solution but can only be done with the engine out. Plan on helicoiling the HPOP threads while you are there, much easier to do with the cover off the engine and laying flat.

More flow, same pressure capabilities...
