Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

Just wondering if any of you have an photo's and a description of what you might be using for additional lighting for night driving! I just haven't seen anything recently as to what I'd like to add, so I thought I'd see what some of you folks use for this purpose.

Thanks..

Re: Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

Check out pix in link below.

LightForce are nice as you can change lenses pending what your needs are and they are a good light for the $$$. VisionX are VERY bright as they are true HID and the nice thing is the ballasts, igniter is all in the light housing, makes for a quick install compared to other HID setups, albeit pricey. The combo I am currently running are LightForce 170's Blue combo filter and VisionX 8500 with Euro lenses.

This combo is NOT street legal....but much better then taking a Moose in the face.....mine are hooked to a relay (one relay per light). The relay trigger is ran through rocker switch on door (that lights when the "Aux lights are activated")then through a foot switch on floor.

cheers,

jrc

I'm running a Pro Comp pre-runner light bar w/5 K.C. Daylighters (SS). A very impressive display at night.

Re: Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

I run the procomp bar with 2 procomp explorer 130w lights, get the Hellas. I ran mine off the high beam switch with another switch to bypass them if I am on the "road". I can put the highbeams and the lights on when I need to or just the highbeams, Makes it easier to turn them off when opposing traffic comes along.

Re: Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

I run two KC daylighters (150 watts w/ stainless steel housing) that are hooked to the high beams through a relay. They have a reflective range of close to a mile and are good moose lights. 3 would be perfect for the best pattern but the 2 do fine. Best I believe unless you spend the big bucks and go HID.

Have the 5" Lightforce on my wife's suburban and they just don't work as well. The larger (9"?) Lightforce are what most of the big rigs around here run so that says alot for them. They pull less amps then the daylighters and you can change the lenses. On the flip side the daylighters are smaller, cheaper and have a warrenty so lenses/bulbs are replaced for the cost of shipping them to AZ.

Re: Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

Does anyone know how the "wattage" of lights...such as in 55W 130w
150w comes out with regard to the candlepower unit?

Years ago my brother had a truck with (what we called them then) aircraft landing lights, and boy they where superb! Don't know if I need that kind of lighting, but something that is perhaps double the intensity of the regular high beams!

Thanks..

Dale

Re: Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

I cannot remember the model number of the PIAA's that I have, but they have a fiberglass frame (no rust) and I have 4 on my front bumper (they replaced some Hella 2000's that rusted very badly). The middle two are pencil beams that are aimed straight ahead and the outer two are called "Eurobeams" (I think), and the illumination pattern makes these perfect for aiming slightly off to either side. They came with 100W bulbs that I replaced with 130W bulbs just for grins. I am very happy with this setup, but they were not cheap. But I use them A LOT during the long dark winters here in Alaska and they have helped me avoid more than one moose! Pete

Re: Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

I run 80/100w xenon headlamps behind clear aftermarket housings, and that's just for starts. Mounted on the big bumper are two Hella worklight housings each holding two 55w halogen lamps, casting a very wide, flat pattern (great for lighting up the ditches and beyond to reveal deer, etc); there are also two rubber tractor lights whose lamps have been replaced with 100w GE aircraft landing lamps (#4509, if memory serves). These are very narrow beams, but very bright. All are re-wired thru relays with 12ga wire; the hi-beams provide the signal, and the lamps are fed directly. The net result is that when I flip on the brights I get 620w worth of evenly-distributed light (vs 130w thru OEM hibeams). It's daytime at night.

Re: Aftermarket additional lighting on front of truck...

I drive my '97 CCSB in southern Baja...where good lights are highly appreciated due to free range cows, horses etc. I posted here and got some great feedback.

I ended up going with a pair of KC long range 130w long range driving lights & a single Hella 150w off road light, both run via 3 way toggles and my hi beams;-) HOLY cow does it light up the night- I could not be happier. I see down the road at least 1/2-2/3 mile fully illuminated. Now I'm thinking of adding back-ups in the rear bumper to avoid the knarly cardons...
