Gearing up to make the trip from So Cal to Fairbanks in late May. In my 107K miles I think I have had every problem noted in these forums, such as 5 Ford trannys and 2 rebuilds, CPSs, IDMs, GP relays, Throttle Pedal sensors,Water pumps, Steering Hoses, on and on.
What would you recomend for a spare parts list and does anyone know of good repair shops on this route I5 thru Vancouver? I can't imagine what else can fail on my truck, but when Ford trannies only last 2500 miles like my last one I try and expect the unexpected. My truck is not dying from improvement as it is mainly OEM.
short of taking another truck...everything would be a quess. i did the trip with just a extra cps and powersteering hose...but both items are still riding in the truck. i would pick up a hose repair kit (pvc connectors and clamps) as that was the only repair i had to do. 91k on my truck and i've only had to replace the cps once. i change out the gpr every 3rd year cause i figure thats about the life of them. i did pass plenty of repair shops(how good they are ) on the way so i don't think you'll be stranded any more than going anywhere else.

Don't forget an extra serpentine belt, Also there is a ford dealership at 100 mile house (can't remember the name)they are good to deal with. By the way, The Alcan is not near as bad as most people believe it is, I drive it from Fairbanks to Portland Or. once a year round trip, relax, drive smart-drive safe and enjoy the trip.

I carry a CPS, belt, and power steering hose. I just did my idler bearings and am still chasing a chirp but will probably add more bearings to the "in case" pile.
Oh, by the way, check out SoCAPS! Link in my sig.

10 gals of # 2 diesel (you probably wouldn’t use it but if you don’t have it, you might need it)
3-4 bottles of fuel additive (to remove water from fuel)
CPS
Road flares
Tools
Spare tire
A “GOOD” jack
Lug wrench
No need for a Power steering hose without the PS Fluid
Gal or 2 of Oil and filter
2 fuel filters
Duct tape
Bring a small propane stove and have a few cook outs in some of the many camping spots along the roadside.
Small Power inverter to recharge camera batterys or to use the Laptop
Electrical kit (black tape, mini and Maxi fuses, test light or Fluke tester)
Pair of headlight bulbs
Tow strap and turn buckles
A good pocket knife/letherman
Lots and lots of film or a digital camera with many Gig’s of free space because you’ll see one thing that you think is the best thing you’ve ever seen, until you go around the next corner and there’s something better. It’s like that for a few thousand miles.
It’s a good thing we own ¾ and 1T trucks .

I just got back from a 5000 mile trip to Yellowstone, Colorado, etc. pulling my 9000lb fifth wheel. All i took was my wife and kids. I really don't understand taking all the extra parts along, if you keep up with regular maintenance you will be just fine.
What makes the Alcan different is that towns are few and far between, GOOD mechanics are even further and parts are almost impossible to get plus your cell phone probably won't work. I've sat in Watson Lk, BC for 3 days while the injector pump on my '83 6.9 took a Princess Tours bus ride to Fort St John, was rebuilt and took a bus ride back. I've made the trip 20 times, most have been great BUT if something does go wrong you'll wish you had a trailer full of spare parts, a mechanic and a computer so you can access this site! Better to be prepared and not need the stuff then spend $$$ on repair bills, tow trucks, food, hotels, shipping... I'd take everything on Jim's list plus anything else you can fit. He's not kidding about the scenery either...

I agree. Middle of nowhere happens anywhere. Happened to me 5pm Christmas eve night in SC where there are loads of people.
I carry a full compliment of tools 3/8 sets to 1/2 allens, hex's wrenches etc etc etc. I even carry some speciality stuff for wheel bearings. Have had to those on the side of the road too.
As far as replcement parts go the above list is good. I limit it to a cps, power steering hose, belt (because mine takes the ambulance package belt), Fuel, antifreeze, additive, trany fluid (sub's for ps fluid), oil, filters (oil, fuel, air), grease, and axle lube.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. Now if fuel prices drop instead of climbing. $2.83 gallon Southern Ca, and $.98 per litre Canada bummer.

I traveled down to the lower 48 in October and came back to Anchorage in December. The price for diesel in Canada ran from about 1.10 to 1.16 per liter!!! I just tried not to think about it but I also tried to conserve fuel whenever possible. I have done this trip several times now and all of the above advise is very good. I had no trouble finding diesel along the way, even in winter when many places are closed for the season. The only real long stretch without diesel is between Watson Lake and Fort Nelson, but there may be fuel in Muncho Lake during the spring and summer seasons. Pete
