alcoa center caps

I was looking into getting a set of alcoa center caps and was wondering what hex size lug nut I would need. Thanks. I have the factory alloys, are they alcoa wheels? I am tired of the factory junk hub covers that keep breaking and falling off.

After some searching around previous threads, I found that the Alcoa center caps for factory alloys (which are made by Alcoa) need the lug nuts and lug caps made by Alcoa, to hold them in place. I tried calling southwest wheel but they left out the part that you need their lug nuts and caps to make their center caps work on the stock alloy wheels. Maybe they don't know? I really think there is more usefull info. on our trucks on this site than anywhere else. This site definately makes life much easier.

I was planning on buying the center caps that southwest wheel has. The center caps I have now, have a lip on them with holes for the lug nuts to go through, and so the lug nuts hold them in place. In the picture it seems to me that the caps southwest wheel carries have such a small lip that they would have to go on first and be held in place by the rims. How could then lugnuts possibly matter? I think I'll buy one cap and try it out, if I'm wrong, I'm only out $12.

By the way, I think the stock alcoa "star" rims would look great painted black, with chrome caps and chrome lugs, just my .02.

The center hole of the wheel is too small for "push through from the back" type caps to fit. I had 2 ideas: Put the wheels in the lathe and bore out the hole to fit the push through caps. OR, buy Weld or Centerline bolt on caps, and drill and tap the wheel to take the 2 1/4 x20 bolts that hold them on. I have seen generic caps thyat fit like the originals but with out the Ford logo resonably priced.

I have the Alcoa center caps on my stock alloy wheels. The caps don't push through from the back side you. You will need the alcoa lug nuts and lug nut covers. Once you put on the alcoa lug nuts you then slide the center cap on from the front and then start putting the lug nut covers on. The lug nut covers hold the center cap on. The edge of the lug nut cover clamps on the lip on the center cap. At first I was a little unsure of how well they would stay on there but after severel miles I have had absolutely no problems with this setup.
