Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

I'm wondering what mods are around to improve TCC hold. Mine is starting to intermittantly slip after 80k, and there is still no sign of clutch debris in the inline filter or pan. Figure if there is a mod available, I could install and test it to see how much it helps with an already slipping converter before I put a new one in.

Only one I'm aware of is replacing the plastic pump drainback with a steel one. Looking for something that increases TCC lock pressure.

The best mod I can think of is a speed-sensitve switch that could activate lockup and keep it from cycling in and out above a set speed. Maybe someone could figure out how to build one and help us out

Guess I had that coming

Really I want to know if a mod will increase holding power. Since it's starting to slip without apparent clutch failure, I would know if the mod helps there.

Re: Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

Do you have a chip? I didn't see one in your sig-a chip can increase line pressure, which will help your TC hold. The best mod you could do would be a transgo tugger shift kit. Only thing is you have to pull the front pump to change the spring that increases line pressure. Richter69 likes them, and thats good enough for me. Other than pulling the trans, you will have to go with a transcommand, unless you can find a set of instructions for a b&m shift kit. Mine had some sort of resistor and directions on soldering it in to raise line pressure, but I didn't use it since i have a ts 4-pos. chip. I might be able to find it in my shop. That would be easy for you, anyway.

transgo kit-pump mods. The raised epc will raise it to a point, then the tcc regulator spring in the pump needs to be replaced.

Re: Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

Thanks, I used a transgo kit in my ranger A4LD, and it helped alot. Does the higher pressure TCC regulator spring come in the kit? Or is there another source. Didn't see the info on their page. I remember reading about a pump upgrade from someone awhile back but can't remember who it was...

Edit: Found the info I was thinking of HERE. Looks like it's just the drainback checkvalve, tho may be more to it. Guess I need to dig further.

that is the sonnax kit, any of the transgo kits will have all the pump parts. The sk kit will be the cheapest.

Re: Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

Thanks!
I'm probably crazy to pull the tranny to upgrade the pump and not change the converter at the same time, but I just have to try it and see what happens with the slipping. Tranny came out pretty quick last time anyway. Looks like Macko has the Transgo kits, just hope the converter holds up till I can install it. Doesn't seem to slip much yet, just occasionally under a load.

I've seen those at DIS before. A bit pricey but an interesting product.

Re: Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

I had Jon put in one of his custom torque convertors and the transgo/sonamax kit. So far over a year with babies and a TWildman 4 pos chip and tranny is still going! About to catch up to Tonys record with babies and stock tranny.
Also makes a good time to change out the exhaust donuts on the up pipes. Always had the ideal that if you are going to get into somewhere you might as well do everything you can while you are there!

Re: Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

Thanks for the reminder!
I do have a leaky collector or donut. Didn't even think to get the gaskets to have at the same time. Also perfect time to replace my smashed trans dipstick tube. And rear fuel rail plugs while they'll be easy to get to.

Re: Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

Got the shift kit in, what an improvement!
Shifting feels so much smoother now.

Tested the converter clutch slip and it is definitely less now. Tested before pulling to a stop with the TCC mod active and the TCC would slip enough for the engine to hold just under 600 RPM. Now, even with the weakened converter it will pull the RPM down to 500. Wish I'd done this when I replaced the TC originally... Maybe buy me some time on the current one tho, as still no debris in the filters.

Also noticed thanks to a blown fuse ('nother story) that when the tranny is in limp mode the shifts aren't near as harsh as before the Transgo kit. They are hard but not back breaking. Apparently besides giving firmer shifts and more pressure it also regulates the shifts better. I guess the multiple valve springs lets the engagement occur in stages instead of slamming in suddenly.

This is the best $50 (and day of labor) mod I've done to the truck.

Re: Any MODS to improve TCC Lockup??? Want to test!!!!

It was the Transgo SK shift kit, and just the parts for the valve body and pump. No other parts at this time tho I was tempted to go thru it while it was out.
