Re: Any Pics of a "solid" Dana 50 TTB

Jon did one for the SwampDonkey years ago.
Ford Twin Traction Beam ( TTB ) Independent Front Suspension ( IFS ) to Straight Axle Conversion

I know of one here locally here in Phx that was converted to a solid axle but he no longer uses it because he now has the balljoint D60 that I was originally going to put under my truck.

And I just recently saw one over on pirate4x4 where the guy used D60 axle shafts.I didnt save the url for that one though so you will have to search the site. There is a whole writeup with pics.

Re: Any Pics of a "solid" Dana 50 TTB

the dana 50 is strong enough i believe, just a PITA when it comes to alignment and ball joints, bushings, etc. i thought maybe this might be an easier/cheaper fix than finding a dana 60, even though thats what i may still do later on.

Re: Any Pics of a "solid" Dana 50 TTB

Seems some guys have had some good luck converting the D50 to a solid axle...I say if you have the skills to do it and are short on money for a D60 right now (like me ) Go for it! The Dana 50 differential will hold up fine.

Re: Any Pics of a "solid" Dana 50 TTB

As far as I know, some of the conversion companies that make econoline 4x4 vans use a solid front axle that is a D50 center.

Does anyone know if there was a D50 front in F250's at some point?

I wonder if that would make a less expensive solid axle swap for our generation of F250???

Re: Any Pics of a "solid" Dana 50 TTB

quick question, as seen in jon's write up he flipped the rear shackle mounts upside down to gain more lift: http://hometown.aol.com/jzettel73/Resources/24_21A.JPG

anyone know how much lift this will gain? any disadvantages? will i need to weld in a stop block with stock springs? may be a cheaper solution vs. F350 blocks. im seriously considering this solid dana 50 idea. thanks

Dan

Re: Any Pics of a "solid" Dana 50 TTB

SKY makes a shackle flip for the rear of our trucks. You do have to use tapered blocks though since you are only dropping one end of the spring. The only downside I've heard about is the shackles folding under side load since they were made t o be in tension and are now in compression. This has been reportedly fixed by using pre 99 Super Duty F450 shackles. One person who i casn remember having them was Slope Truck. Iv'e been thinking about the best way of lifting the rear mysel lately.

yes all 99-01 F250's used a solid axle 50, but the lug pattern is metric.

The only 50 they might use is the SD style, but I highly doubt it.
Vans are wider than trucks.
The two biggest converters Quigly and Advance 4wd Ssytems (worked there YEARS ago) use custom built 60's.

Mine's holding up well, just added some homemade bumpstops yesterday but the axle works well. Wish I had a plasma cutter when I did it I would have done the back differently could have made it look more factory.

Kept putting off rotating my new tires and now they have 15k on them, slight cup on the front but not as bad as my straight axle toyota would do in 5k. There's a vendor on ebay that sells the whole drag link tie rod setup for a 92-97 f350 with a straight axle I would buy that package if you do it so you have all new. On the rear shackle flip deal I would get sky's brackets for that and also you can buy their shackles by themselves fairly cheap and they are super stout and you can use them out back(they use them in compression on the front) no way you are gonna roll them over.
