Anybody else lifting the head with Stage ones, D66 , ARP headstuds and Cometic gaskets?

Just started the other day, anything over 28 lbs of boost and I hear a sound that sounds like a exhaust leak and the head manifold junction so I take a gander under the truck tonight and see that I have been loosing coolant out the head stud and looks like I got some coolant coming out between the gaskets as well on the right rear cylinder. How do people get away with 40psi on stock heads bolts and gaskets when I cant even get past 28psi without lifting my cylinder head After I spend $4500 on rebuilding the POS because after I stuck in my injectors my wrist pin bushing decided the take a dive on me. Im ready to sell the whole works and buy a 24V Dodge and convert it over to a P pump and have something that I dont have to worry about anymore. I just cant seem to catch a break.

I Cant remember right off hand but it was what ARP recommended for torque, with their moly lube and a brand new Snap-on torque wrench in the torque sequence that I found on the Diesel innovations website. I also took the gasket apart and sprayed each shim with copper coat.

Re: Anybody else lifting the head with Stage ones, D66 , ARP headstuds and Cometic gaskets?

There definitly has been some confusion over what is the correct torque and I believe the published data is wrong???? Also what about retorque. I would be concerned that the copper coat would move once it got hot.

In any case I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. it really bites to go out of your way to do a good job and then have problems.

ARP has their torque specs listed pretty low, something like 90 if I remember correctly. I used the torque specs and tightening sequence from DI's site. Try retorqueing yours and see if that helps.

Re: Anybody else lifting the head with Stage ones, D66 , ARP headstuds and Cometic gaskets?

I work at a high performance engine shop and we have never had troubles with head gaskets that could be traced back to ARP torque specs, we have had problems with cometic MLS gaskets leaking water before but havent had problems with them sealing the combustion chamber except for our crazy 2300hp+ turbo and procharger stuff. With those we have O-ringed the cylinder heads and the block and use a copper gasket coated in hylomar. No problems with copper coat moving around either on some of our other stuff. Fel-Pro MLS gaskets are the only way to go in my opinion, they coat them very lightly with a stickey Viton rubber and havent had a single problem with them. Too bad they dont make them for a 7.3 My only choice other that pulling the engine is to try and retorque the head gaskets and pulling the engine is completely out of the question for right now and this truck is my only transportation. Thanx for the help guys.

im running cometics with h11 studs on mine, but on a much hotter setup that yours- no leaking here. both block and heads were decked for a smooth finish.

What thickness Cometics?
Hopefully not the .120"...
I would not have sprayed copper coat on them either, they are not designed for it. They work great as designed, that might have messed them up.

Re: Anybody else lifting the head with Stage ones, D66 , ARP headstuds and Cometic gaskets?

ARP TQUE SPECS ARE WRONGGGGGG! I have had about 5 customers now blow hg's because of thier specs, they are not even as much as stock specs. Do nothing less then 120 ft lbs! They say in thier specs to do 90#'s and it will blow a hg.

My suggestion is since you have Cometics is to just go in and tque to 120#'s and see if it quits doing it, its possible.

Re: Anybody else lifting the head with Stage ones, D66 , ARP headstuds and Cometic gaskets?

At the shop we will do anything possible to not use a Cometic MLS gasket but if we must they are liberaly sprayed in copper coat and even then it is a crap shoot on if they will leak or not. Thanx bean, I plan on torquing the head to 120, I am shure that the gasket is still fine since it is sealed under 28PIS of boost, pretty hard to blow out a solid SS gasket shim.

Mickey, what thickness gasket are you using?

Re: Anybody else lifting the head with Stage ones, D66 , ARP headstuds and Cometic gaskets?

Mickey,

We worked with Cometic to develop the MLS gaskets for the Power Stroke nearly 5 years ago, and have never had a Cometic failure when installed on an engine which has been decked...and we've never sprayed any coating on the gaskets, as they come with a couple of mils of a viton coating...which give them the black color.

Did you have your heads and block decked for the proper surface finish prior to installing the Cometics?

The factory head & block finish is faaaar to coarse for the Cometics to seal properly.

If your heads & block were deacked, then the problem with coolant leaking is most likely the ARP torque being too low.

take care~

Dave
