I don't think he needed anything too special. I know I didn't when I took mine apart to change the tail housing and output shaft for my 4x4 conversion.

I found a 2wd E4OD from an E-350 with 7.3 the advertize it as 2wd or 4wd but it has the cone on the back so would i need to change the out put shafts also , i cant just un bolt the cone and bolt the transfer case up. thanks

Not to hijack the thread, but when you changed to 4x4, did you need to switch out any other parts? From the parts drawings I've seen it looks like the 4x4 has a different pan and screen. (I'm planning to do a similar conversion on my 4x2).
Thanks,
RD

Yea, I think the pan is a little deeper on the 4X. I didn't change mine,at least not right away.

I changed mine from 2wd to 4wd and all you need is the shorter output shaft, and tail housing. The 4/4 does use a deeper pan and the filter has a longer neck to get down to the bottom of the deeper pan. I had to make some tools to dissassemble my transmission. One was a clutch compressor to remove a huge C-clip in the case. and a tool to remove the drum from the case. If you do a search you will find companies that make the tools then you can copy them.

I only bought one tool it was the drive train tool seen here Racer X Automotive
As Brian said you don't need the drive train tool however it is extremely nice to have. Below is a link to the pictures I took while rebuilding. There is a picture of the spring compressor i made too. You need to have about 3-4 4" c-clamps with it. Also the "2x4" spring compressor I rigged. I highly recommend Racer-X's help and products. I could not have rebuilt my trans without his customer service he gave me over the phone. Index of /viper/e4odstuff
