The broken leaf in my stock rear springs got me moving on installing the B codes that were waiting under the trees for me to get to them. The job took me 2 1/2 days. I don't work fast or long hours. The drivers side went relatively easy. It was my learning side. The Passenger side started easy until I got the old spring out and the difficulties started when tried to remove the shackle. The shackle bolt was rusted in. I managed to get it broken loose and turning easily but when I tried to extract it, it froze in the spring. I worked on that bolt for three hours before getting the saw and cutting it. That meant a trip into town for a new bolt, an hour lost there. That bolt cost me 4 hours. Once I had the shackle removed and new bolt installed all went well.
My truck did not have overload springs and I have air bags. The B codes had overloads but if I used them I could not use the air bags. The Bs went in without the overloads. I had to carve a little over a half inch from the shackles to allow them to rotate the needed amount. When the axle was fully dropped the springs hit my exhaust but once compressed they clear the exhaust with plenty room to spare. Other than the shackle trimming they were a direct bolt in. The new springs did not add any lift, in fact they might be a quarter inch lower. I didn't want any lift so they worked as planned. I only drove the truck a slow speed mile so far and I think I feel a definite difference in the ride. Hope I'm not imagining the improvement. Come Monday I'll take it for a better test. The 5 leaf Bs are sure a lot beefier than the original 4 leaf springs.
