Best Cummins Conversion Kit

I've been reading a bunch of threads about the cummins conversion. I was wondering for all those who have done it who has the best kit? I found a 12v cummins still in an 89 Dodge pickup. Will this motor work? Should I rebuild my e4od or go with something else?
Thanks

Re: Best Cummins Conversion Kit

well the whole point of that swap would be for more power, and the E40d won't take a whole lot, so yeah. And it will work, but I think (not sure) most guys are using ones from newer engines. I'm not sure though. (like a 94)

Re: Best Cummins Conversion Kit

An '89 is gonna have a getrag or a 727 tourqueflite... so your E4OD will be better than whatever is in the Dodge.

An '89 is the simplest one to convert. It has no intercooler and it only takes a hot wire to the pump to make it run. It's also a rotary pump motor which you can turn up with a screwdriver, but it's limits are about 450-500hp and you need a bigger head on the pump to go that far with it.

I would look for a newer truck with the P7100 inline pump and the NV4500. If you stay with an auto you will need a standalone controller for it.

Mine was holding 600rwhp daily and 650+rwhp for 150+ passes at the track....

Stock your right- they arent very tough but you start adding good parts and they become very tough. I had my built trans tore down and inspected @ 20k miles and everything was well within specs even with all the daily beatings, racing and towing.

Re: Best Cummins Conversion Kit

Try PMing Maddog or look him up, Maddog Motorsports in Utah. He has had a 12v in his 95 for years and is still the king.

Re: Best Cummins Conversion Kit

Not sure what will be the best swap for the engine, but I would stay away from the getrag transmission that dodge had even thought the transmission is built tough. I had one in my 93 Dodge 3500 and keep burning the 5th gear bearing out. I found out that the way the trans was designed that the 5th gear pulled the oil away from the 5th gear bearing. So, there was no oil going to the bearing. I fixed the problem by fulling the transmission all the way up to the breather on top. After that I had no more problems.

Yes a stock E40D won't take the power. That's what I meant. I should have phrased it different but I was getting to the fact that he will have to spend another 2-4 grand (?) on the tranny to get it to handle the power.
