Power Strokes 1994-1997 Upgrades and AftermarketUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1994-1997 Ford F-Series with Power Stroke engine.
Have a 1997 f350 4x4 crew cab ,diesel of course. pull a large horse trailer an want more stopping power on the truck side. is there a big brake kit for the front available? an what about a conversion for the rear to disc or a complete swap out for rear ? it's also a single rear no dually. pull a 17,000 lbs of trailer so don't want anything that would be iffy! what's your opions?
I don't think you'll find a big brake kit for the front. There may be a kit to convert the rear to disc's. Have you considered an exhaust brake? A lot of guys also convert their EBPV to a poor man's exhaust brake, which essentially operates the valve from a toggle switch in the cab. That would be way I'd do it and it's cheap.

Best bang for the buck is Hydroboost conversion, then slotted rotors and hawk pads, then the rear disc kit. If it wont stop with that, then you need a bigger truck. Actually, electric trailer brakes and a Prodigy controller will make a HUGE difference. Make sure the trailer brakes are up to snuff. I finally fixed mine and it works 100% better.

Yep already have the Prodigy controller, it does ok now just down shift to 2nd on the bigger hills. just thought if there was something out there easy an reasonable I would consider it.. Thinking about the exhaust brake thing though that be easy enough. thanks
My '97 Superduty (450 I'd say) has the hydraboost and four wheel disk brakes from the factory. You may be able to sway the fronts but the backs would probablly require the axle be changed. Too bad you don't have a dually as the swap wouldn't be that bad. Would be worth a call to your dealer to see what if any parts would swap.
I can honestly say that this truck has the best brakes of any Ford truck I've ever owned.
I'm planning for the hydroboost swap myself. The popular opinion is it makes at least as much difference (if not more) than rear disc.
I'm not a big fan of the aftermarket kits that use the Eldorado calipers. I'd rather have a drum-in-hat style parking brake. I'm probably going to adapt something OEM at a later date.

some have gotten a 97-00?? van axle--with the old 8 bolt pattern, and adapted that to get rear discs. believe it has emer in rotor--they just use all the outboard pieces--and since its ford--it all goes together, except for making the plate to get caliper brackets to the axle--and i believe they even cut the piece off the van axle to weld to the truck axle--

Yeah, I've seen that conversion. Hard to find an affordable van/disc axle around here. I do have an '07 350SD axle, but the large diameter (17"+ wheels) and metric pattern don't make it very conversion friendly.
TSM rear disc brakes i have heard no complaints about really can get with ebrake or without without is cheaper Ford - Truck
