I keep my truck pretty clean underneath and attack an oil leak like a shark on a blood trail. I just happened to be looking under the fenderwell this weekend and noticed the front shock seemed a little oily. I pulled the boot up and about a cup of shock oil dumped out. I love the Bilstien 5100's but I'm a little suprised by this! The truck hasn't been off roaded hard or anything, couldn't be bottom out damage. Shocks are about a year old less than 20k miles. I also have seen comments from folks indicating they interpreted that the fronts should be mounted rod end down. I have them the normal way. Has anyone had similar issues? Any warranty claims?

Just got off the phone with www.offroadwarehouse. The deal is I have to buy a new shock at 79.99 and then ship the old one back to Bilstein. ORW seemed real good about it, but indicated it was up to Bilstein. If warr they will credit me. I also discussed the "which way is right side up" question on the front shocks and the reply was " These are nitrogen charged shocks and can be mounted either way, it does not affect the shock in any way" I wish I was hearing that from Bilstein directly, but when asked why the lettering was upside down when mounted the normal body down way, they didn't have an answer.

I agree that the gas shock can be mounted in either direction. Most people prefer to mount the shock body towards the top and the shaft on the axle end to reduce unsprung weight. Not that it matters on these tanks. It started back in the days of race cars/trucks and motorcyles/ATV's. I doubt anyone in our situation will notice difference but it looks cool.
