blow off valve??

Has any one tried one? Will they help perfomance? Sound?

I have seen the model BD makes, but $650 is a bit much. A "normal" blow off valve, made by Turbonetics runs from $200-$300. I assume there would need to be some adaptation, but I can not understand double the cost.

Maybe its juvenile, but I would really like to hear the psssssh after every shift.

Is it possible to adapt one? Is it worth it.

Re: blow off valve??

Just wire a switch into your stock EBPV valve and use it as an exhaust brake, its $20 and you get a loud hiss whenever you want, blow off valves are for ricers

Re: blow off valve??

a blow off valve is not a performance device. It's main intention is to prevent compressor surge.

On a engine with a throttle body when you are at full boost and let off the throttle the TB closes and all the compressed air is dead stopped forcing it to backup into the turbo. That is hard on the life of the turbo.

It also helps by diverting the air from the intake. If you are at full boost and let off the pedal, all that air is still being forced down the engines intake causing the engine not to slow down(vehicle still accelerating after you let off the pedal).

BOV's are not for ricers see car in my siggy that aint no ricer! I would hate like heck to A)fold 75mm throttle blade over. or

B)trash my T-netics turbo there are times when (on a street car) you must chop the throttle.

Re: blow off valve??

BOVs are for the most part for gassers. They do have a place in a diesel engine that is makeing huge boost like one with twins. They prevent stall not surge. The BOV that BD makes is expensive because of the electronics that come with it. A typical BOV blows off once a certin pressure is reached against it. However on a diesel there is never really a spike in pressure. However when you lift the throttle on a hard accell if you are makeing tons of boost all that air will try to back back out of the turbo makeing it stop or reverse direction instantly. So there are electronics attached to the throttle pedal that activate it when you lift. You can adjust it by how fast you lift off the throttle and how sensitive it is. But it will not give you the sound you are looking for. If you want that sound go buy that ricer mentioned above.

Re: blow off valve??

speed deisel is very correct, to be of any use you much have electronics to open teh valve at a closed throttle, teh boost doesn't surge over any given psi ,just eh amoutn of air backing up teh turbo stalls the compressor. Yes you do need lots of boost and wild ( or Wildman ) programming. I have both and yes I do get compressor stall if I let off too fast from 35psi or durign shifts ( w/ an auto even) but only in teh daily or race settings. Sounds great but I bet teh shaft will go soon.

Re: blow off valve??

This may be a stupid question but here goes. Watching truck pulls and when then come to the end of there pull and let off you here a huffing noise from the turbo is this stall? I figured it was just the air the engine didnt use coming back out.

That's were the stall comes from, if its enough air to stop or stall the compressor.

Could be, may just be the turbine spinning down quickly on the exhaust side of things. Mine does that, gut the ebpv and run a downpipe and straight pipe and yours will too. Just kinda a "bark" older cummins dodge's with open short (ie stacks or a pipe out the side) do it too.

Yes you are correct on both counts. It is stall and it is the air comming back out. Very hard on turbo shafts.
