Exclamation can you reuse a power programmer

I have a question for you guys I am looking to buy a power programmer for my 97 7.3. I found a used one and the guy guaranties it works fine and said it came off a 96 7.3 but it would work on my truck. I always thought that once you plugged them in to one truck you couldn’t use them on another truck. He said not true along as you plugged it in and clear everything back to stock settings on the one truck you can use them on another truck. I am not that familiar with them. Had one on a 97 Chevy once and couldn’t use it on my buddy’s truck after I used it on mine but I also didn’t clear it from the first truck. Any info would be helpful and the price for the programmer is dirt cheap too.

The unit is a Hypertech Power Programmer III for a 1992-1997 F-250 F-350, 7.3L Power Stroke diesel. May fit other years as well. Programmer complete with box and instructions, works on manual and automatic trans. made a very impressive improvement on my daily driver and would recommend one to everyone.

He was right. How it works is it downloads the factory program into the programmer and then uploads the new program into the PCM. It then is locked to the vehicle until you reconnect it and reload the factory program so that you can use it on another truck.

But it is a one size fits all program that it installs on your truck. You would be better off by buying a custom burnt chip from one of the chip burners. Just don't expect to get much more than 50 or 60 more horses out of either until you change out the injectors.

I have the exact programmer on my 97 and it makes a big difference in performance. It has menu options for either stick or auto tranny. I had a PCM failure and the new one Ford installed had a very lame program in it, worse than the stock program the truck came from the factory with. The programmer has greatly improved performance over that setup. If you can get it cheap and perhaps test it before you buy, it would be worth it IMHO.

I know but its all about the dollars. I can pick up the programmer cheap and save up for a 6 position chip.
