to chip, or not to chip

Hey guys, I'm hoping you can give me some tips on different chips for my Dads work truck. It's a 97 F350 auto 4x4 with 112k on it, fuel mileage has been getting slowly worse over the last two years ( 5k work trailer always on tow). We were talking to some one the other day that had a chip put in their truck they said it got way better mileage So my question is which is the best bang for the buck, and do I need to do anything to protect the trans? Also could I put it in my self?? Thinks Andy

I plan on chipping my truck one of these days as well. Before I do I will install a set gauges for my turbo, exhaust gas temperature and transmission. I think most members on here would reccomend that as well. Remember, heat is the enemy.

Send a message via AIM to 91diesel Send a message via MSN to 91diesel
And, more fuel almost always=more heat.
And, more fuel=more volume of expanding gasses.Overboost situation if lucky?
And, boost gauge wouldnt hurt and its neat to watch it go up and down as your foot does.
And, too many ands.

CHIP! thing wakes the truck up and damn its sweet!
Since my upgrades I've been able to get 17mpg in Econo with my TW Chip, which is the best! Well best to deal with and some awsome tunes.

I had the same question, finally put on a downpipe and a DP Tuner F5 chip, all I can say is WOW, not the same truck. Don't know about the mileage yet, but appears to be better. Give Jody a call and he'll steer you in the right direction.

Best chip for a 7.3 is a Tony Wildmad chip.

Look at getting a Tymar intake and new exhaust and you will love the difference it will make.

Check your fuel pressure..should be 70 psi at idle if not clean the sceen and install a bb.

Get a BTS valve body and the biggest trans cooler you can fit.

I chipped but it made my trans shift funky - the power was nice but I knew the trans wasn't shifting right and probably wouldn't last. No shifting problems stock however.

Did you double check the copper to make sure it is clean? Talk to Tony he'll fix it.

my trans is startin to slip again too, might have to send in the chip for a reburn, im just not crazy about putting it back in though, last time i almost tore a copper thingy off, lol.
Course my trans temp gauge reads 250 like all the time, so after i figure out that problem i can yell at Tony,

i don't think an "over boost" situation would happen with just a chip.
especially with stock injectors and a stock turbo.
