Comments please on synthetic oils for motor and E40D transmission and Dana 60 rear

I bought all the synthetics and now I'm pausing to double check that I'm not making a mistake.

1996 E350 Van

Full Synthetic Rotella T 5-40 7.3L Power Stroke
Full Synthetic for E40D
Full Synthetic 75-140 Dana 60

Our winter cold here is mostly -20 and -30 with wind chills to -60, my van sits outside and is plugged in with a large Kim Hotstart 2000 Watt coolent heater and warmed for several hours before starting.

If you bought a full synthetic ATF that has a MERCON or MERCON V rating it will be fine for the E4OD.

Good to hear, that's what I have. What about the rear end and motor?

How about Genuine Mercon V is that the best of the best or does it not make any difference?

Not my area. I'll leave that for others.

MERCON V is a rating, not a brand. Any MERCON V is fine.

But V instead of the old MERCON for my E40D, is V better?

I know you can't mix the old MERCON with the New MERCON V, at least that is what our New Ford Parts Dealer says here in Fargo.

You can't mix them he says.

Mark can explain this better than I can...but Ford recently changed the rating of Mercon V to be acceptable to use in the E4OD. For a long time it wasn't recommended...at least if my memory services me correctly. Anyway I believe transmission fluids are rated 'both' Mercon and Mercon V now that are acceptable for the E4OD.

The original MERCON V wasn't good for the E4OD. Ford discontinued MERCON and changed MERCON V to be compatible with all transmissions that used MERCON. MERCON is now an obsolete specification.

Hey Mark question for you?

What type of setup are you using for you transmission?
I personally am a mobile man so Mobil 1 ATF will be going in. I am fairly new to owning a diesel besides growing up around them. Dads truck is a manual so no issues. I have the auto obviously and have been pulling my hair out trying to decide on wether or not to put a B&M pan on it for the temp bung and drain plug. Or should I just put a drain plug in the factory one. Also when I change the filter are you running any other filter system like the diesel site, or should I just use the Micron... filter in line like powerstroke help says. Should I drain the torque converter or not. Basically give me your opinion on everything related that you can think of with the e40d. Thank you very much in advance.

Had a coversion van once with the E40D tranny. I noticed slippage in it so I took it in ( private shop) before Ford approved the change the mechanic installed the Mercon V. No trouble since. Dealer wanted to replace the transmission!!!!

Got a buddy(96PSD) who's trans pan had a leak(E4OD) he just bought a Ford pan from the dealer for $35.00(discounted to him)it had a drain plug in it, his original didn't have a drain plug. Apparently there are 2 pans a standard and a deep pan you can buy the factory deep pan and filter and be set.

That is the 4R100 pan. Fits right up and has a drain plug. Reminds me once again to order one.

I'm using the setup that my van had on it when it left the factory. It's had fluid changes and it's first internal filter change at 120k.

When changing the fluid either use the flush procedure in the FAQs or drain the pan and the torque converter.

I put in Mobil 1 Synthetic Mercon V yesterday. I just drained the torque converter and took the pan off, it took 14 quarts. I wished I had done the blow out procedure for the cooler but I didn't quite understand it until to late and I had driven it for several miles. Next time that is what I will do. I will always change the filter and clean the donut magnet when I do it, a little messy but well worth it. It smoothed the shifts right out, smooth as silk I could easily say. The magnet had a lot on it as did the bottom of the pan.

The rear end got Amsoil Extreme 75-90 Full Synthetic and the motor got Rotella Full Synthetic 5-40.

Next is the power steering and brake fluid and I'll be good for the inter.
