First a little background: I have a 1997 Crew-cab dually that I purchased third-hand with 194k miles. It's now nearly up to 200k, and it's primary purpose in life is to be a fun project for me to work on in my spare time (and to occasionally haul a load of junk or two.) One aspect of this project is that I wish to convert it over to 4wd. This will necessarily entail some transmission work. However, since it's nearing 200k with an unknown history, it's probably due for some work anyways.
I've found a guy selling an E4OD out of a '96 with a blown engine for what I believe to be a reasonable price. So the question of the day is: Are there any differences between a 1996 and a 1997 transmission that would affect the process or outcome of a DIY rebuild? If I go take a look at this transmission, is there anything in particular that I could/should check to make sure it's not completely toast/ruined/trashed/etc.? It'd be nice to be able to take my time building the transmission without having the truck inoperable the entire time.
If and when I go forward with this phase of the project I will likely use the RacerX kit parts that people seem so fond of.

Big difference between someone that has built trans for years, developed many new parts and someone till very recently just sold radios. Talking to a expert and taking notes is different than doing it. Call JW or BTS don't take my word for it.

How much better do you think a jw trans can be vs a bts or racer-x trans? Are you that simple minded that you don't realize that there is only so much you can put in a stock case?

No but I do know that racer X can't get the parts that JW and BTS puts in, he's tried..And I know where RX got his "experience" from.
Its simple you want a trans that will handle anything get a BTS or JW otherwise take your chances with a DYI from others

Where do you think jw or bts came from? Do you think they just popped up from no where they had to start somewhere. My trans has had zero issues I drive my truck harder then anyone I know. When my trans was going out I called bts at least 3 times leaving messages each time. I never received one phone call. I got my kit from Racer-x, he took my calls, walked me threw steps I didn't understand. He even took my calls on a sunday during a family birthday. I go where the customer service is and no where else.
Do you really think that bts and jw have custom made clutches for these transmissions?
