Power Strokes 1994-1997 Upgrades and AftermarketUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1994-1997 Ford F-Series with Power Stroke engine.
Does anyone know if there is a way to get away from the heavy clutch fan. I know electric is an option but don't know where to start. I want to keep it simple. Right now I am running without the cooling fan as it is not warm in my neck of the woods. Just replaced the water pump again !! Seems that I'm only getting 125,000 km out of each pump. 380,000 km on the truck and I would like to keep going. Any advice on the fan??
Thanks

I don't know about the electrics, sounds great if they work. I don't trust aftermarket mods much. I'm still fighting my fan clutch after 4 new replacements I'm still not satisfied with how the clutch performs.
About the water pump, this may be just opinion, but it makes good sense. Most antifreeze is high in silicates to protect aluminum. From what I've read the silicate ruins water pumps in vehicals designed for low silicate antifreeze. Our trucks specify use only low silicate. I think only the old green standard antifreeze is low silicate and not all of it, you have to read and see if it meets the ford spec spelled out in the manual. I've been literally afraid to change antifreeze for this reason so after 13 yrs I thought it time and went to ford and got the correct antifreeze. If they don't have the motorcraft, they will hopefully have a suitable use antifreeze and it won't be Peak, Prestone or Zerex most likely. Sure all antifreeze whether it green, red, purple or hot pink says "Safe for all engines". Yea safe if you don't mind replacing water pump every couple years.

Downpipe cut and welded to adapt 3" into a 12" outlet. 12" muffler cut and adapted to 2", then a special turbo manifold from a volkswagon modified to flank out to 3" to the tail pipe. Interior from a Corvair modified by cutting 6" off the padding. Snize and snide 32gallon aux tank mounted in rear seat, rear seat relocated to bed. Bed shortened to 4ft.
An electric fan conversion is pretty pricey. I concur that the aftermarket (Hayden) clutches suck. I learned my lesson. Bite the bullet and go with the OEM clutch. I can't remember which pump is preferred. If I can find the name I'll post it up. Airtec??
Supposedly Ford Windstar electric fans are suitable..if you dont tow heavy..from what i recall.

ZombieT....how much do you tow and where? It would seem your ride is set up for towing and if so I would keep the stocker fan on....and just run w/o in the winter...Both my trucks have e-fans my '96 design is removable but just the same a hassle and if you tow a bunch there is nothin' like the B52 prop out front to cool things down. If not that much a E-system will work.
As a suggestion I used to run K&N and they are a good product just make sure you're on the maintanence...used to find small dust film on the intake upstream of filter...switched to donaldson paper no dust film....anyways I think I have some pix of the twin E-fans Taurus set up in my pix in truck folder....just for ideas...
