DIY Bedliner as Undercoating?

The WalMarts carries a DIY bedliner kit, that is pretty inexpensive. I am about to use some chemical rust converter, and then I was considering using this roll-on bedliner stuff as undercoating.

Has anyone heard of this being done, or can anyone think of a reason why this is a bad idea?

Re: DIY Bedliner as Undercoating?

i have heard of it being done, but i don't recommend it, because it is REALLY thin. now, if you were to let Line-X or Rhino linings do it, that would work great, as long as you covered everything that needed to stay unsprayed. that other stuff would be a waste of your time/money as thin as it is, it would just chip off...

Ditto to what Josh said. I've seen that DIY stuff in a friends truck. It started peeling off after about a year. and it looks awfull.

Re: DIY Bedliner as Undercoating?

Stay away from the DIY stuff.

I had a 69 chevy truck one time, that I had the Rhino liner stuff sprayed inside the cab. They sprayed everything but the door panels and dash. It was easy to clean and sure dampened the road noise.

Re: DIY Bedliner as Undercoating?

I used the herculiner DIY stuff and it works great besides its only as thin as you put it on you could buy 2 kits and put it on twice as thick and still be less then half a spray on liner

Re: DIY Bedliner as Undercoating?

I've used the DIY Hurculiner for a few things. Mostly as a sound barrier on the floor below the carpet. It works fine for that. As for the exterrior, that may be a different story. In Texas, as you know, you have UV break-down issues. That stuff is very prone to such. As for the undercoating.....Heres what I did.
1. Clean underside as much as possible using pressure washer.
2. Spot clean tough areas using brake cleaner and a rag. (leaves no residue)
3. use Extended or other rust converter on any spots. (dry overnight)
4. Use automotive grade etching primer on any bare metal parts.
5. 1 very light coat of Duplicolor spray undercoating. (let dry completely)
6. Second heavier coat of the same.

The key to this is in the prep and patience. Take each step slowly and make sure surfaces are clean and dry. Take the time to do masking of areas for over-spray protection. Park the entire truck on a disposable plastic tarp. Wear eye-protection and or a face shield. Use a portable light to insure uniform coverage in hard to reach spots. Above all, take your time. My time + a few bucks has = no underbody rust. Have fun!

Re: DIY Bedliner as Undercoating?

I've had good results with herculiner, prep is the key. You can layer it on as thick as you want. Also wear gloves and cloths you can throw away, it's nasty if you get some on you. Ventilation equipment migh be nice too.
