Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

Bullydog info that came with my chip says the CEL comes on because of the boost level. Says nothing else is affected.
However, I keep hearing that trucks (not sure if OBS or SD) will defuel when the CEL comes on due to "overboost". Is this true?

The SD is the one's that defuel when you hit 25 psi, our trucks don't defuel until you let off the throttle!

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

What I have heard in the past is that the OBS dont DE fuel but that FURTHER increase in fueling is limited. This is a question for Jody or Tony.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like the boost foolers and defueling is a SD thing.

My 95 threw a code at 36lbs. After the MAP reg was installed, NO more code.

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

Thanks gixxer. I guess that is the other part of the situation. When you see a CEL there is a code that has been thrown due to the "higher than normal boost".

Well, I didn't have AutoE back then. I went to Home Depo, bought a mini reg, set for 22psi, installed it, and never seen the light again.

I know they store a code, but I haven't seen one turn on the CEL.

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

WIth a smaller exhaust housing I'll definitely be over that 25psi alot so I'd like to get it stopped. I suppose I can check the codes to see if it is something else as well as get a blowoff valve. I noticed the SDs have $30 pig tails that are called "boost foolers". Don't suppose they fit the OBS trucks do they?

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

Used an adjustable blow off valve on mapp line. Set at 24lbs. No more light or code. My 4dollar cure.
Valve--Grainger---6D915--3.89
Its a tiny valve.
I'am shure the price has changed. I installed in 2002.

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

Hey Tankota,

As I recall reading on here a while back the PCM does not de-fuel, however, when seeing more than 24lbs (?) boost the signal (to PCM is erratic) and the PCM does not add any more fuel. I can not remember (exactly) where, when I read this but it would have been here. At any rate I put on an adjustable relief value set at 22psi on the map line. Also hooked my boost gauge on the HOT side of the intercooler and it shows 29lbs often.....

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

My 97 Calif. truck will throw a turbo overboost code CEL at about 22-24 psi. After about 6-10 times the code goes permanent and the CEL stays on all the time. The truck does not defuel when this happens. I used a pressure regulator set to about 19 psi and that cured the problem. No more CELs at 32 psi. I have had the pressure setting of the pressure regulator set too low (about 13-14 psi) and that definitely does not allow full enrichment (as opposed to defueling). Before installing the regulator, the truck would hit 400 hp with a turbo overboost CEL so I am sure no defueling was taking place.

The SD map sensor has a voltage output and uses a zener diode to limit the output to 4.7 volts to prevent the CEL and subsequent defueling ( a particularly SD only phenomenon). The OBS map sensor outputs a increasing frequency so the zener diode mod will not work on the OBS trucks. You either have to limit the input pressure or use a map simulator to prevent the CEL on a OBS truck.

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

Thanks Dave, we can always count on you for accurate info! Does anyone know what the situation is with pre 97 and Federal trucks is? It seems like the 97 Calif trucks were advanced beyond the other OBS.

Re: Do OBS trucks defuel when you hit 25psi?

Wow! That is some really good info! Thanks!
The CEL is slightly embarassing when someone who is not used to diesels is riding in the truck
Especially annoying that it stays on until the truck is turned off.

Since I'll be putting a .84 housing on sooner rather than later I'd better get on this blowoff valve for the map line.

Thanks again!

My '97 non-Cali truck will set overboost codes, but will not set the CEL.
