Double Clutch System?

Okay so a buddy of mine has a double clutch on his Dodge and I am wondering what the possibility is of putting one on my 1996 F250 5spd. I have a 4:10 in the diffs right now and do about half highway long distance driving and half work truck heavy lifting. A DCT seems like the perfect solution. Any thoughts or recommendations?

What is a double clutch? I've never heard of it. What does it do?

or maybe there is some misunderstanding that he is doubleclutching his truck. which is just a different way of changing gears, push the clutch once and put the tranny in neutral, push the clutch again and place it in the next gear. Or maybe he is just pulling on your leg......LOL

Or maybe he means an add on overdrive unit. It's impossible to say from what is in his post.

Hi gear and Low gear transmission

I am talking about a Hi speed and Low speed transmisison like on a semi. Maybe you guys know a better term for it. There is a pull lever on the gear shift that transfers the shifting to a second clutch. Am I totally off?

I believe your talking about a range selector, can either be a range selector in the tranny or a 2-3 speed rear-end. It doubles or triples (depending on how many ranges) the amount of gears you have in the transmission.

You are talking about an add on overdrive unit. I've never heard called a double clutch.

US Gear makes one that will fit your truck. Gear Vendors is another company that makes one.

Double clutching is a technique for shifting non-synchronized transmissions. Twin disc clutches have two discs with an intermediate pressure plate between them. This gives you the ability to handle more power and torque.

The button or small lever you refer to is a range selector on a truck transmission.

You can also have a second transmission that gives you more gears, as noted the Gear Vendors or US Gear units are the most common.

What your friend probably has is either a Gear Vendors or US Gear overdrive or underdrive unit. With the final drive ratio you have what you are after is an overdrive unit.

Hope this gets you going.

If you check the whole thread he is talking about a two speed auxiliary transmission like his friend's Dodge has. He is not talking about double clutching a non-synchronized transmission nor is he talking about a dual disc clutch.
