downpipe question

I'm looking for a downpipe for my 1995, I was told that since I have a 5 spd. that I will not be able to find one that fits without having it custom bends put in the pipe???? I knew I would have to do some Fab work but from what I understand its more or less bending the flange on the firewall not the actual pipe. Can any chime in on this for me and also any suggestions on where to get a good down pipe would be helpful. Thanks

I've done two (one auto, one manual) and with both trucks we used an air grinder, with a cutoff wheel on it, to cut a few slices into the firewall flange and then bent them over to give enough clearance for mandrel bent downpipe. Lots of places for down pipes or complete systems. I used a complete MBRP system on my auto and my buddy used an after market brand down pipe (not sure what brand though) on his 5-speed truck.

From what I've seen not true. Seen both 5sp and auto. Did the install myself on my 5sp. As already said just requires a little firewall alteration. Most of any suppliers on this site have the kits from turbo back in some form or another. You'll be amazed at the difference!

When you see what the factory downpipe looks like compared to a mandrel bent pipe, you'll know why. Couple that new down pipe with an intake kit ( I used a Tymar) and you'll see even more of an increase in performance and fuel economy.

The first thing was downpipe and tymar and it was a noticable improvement in power, can't say it did much for mileage though....maybe it's the way I drive

Mileage depends on your Right foot and how far down it goes.

Good Luck

There are various companies producing a two piece unit to replace the original pan cake style down pipe that you have from the factory. MBRP and BD Diesel Performance are two good examples. The biggest hurdle is cutting the old one out. I did mine and took me about two hours to install. Mind you, I had access to a hoist which really helped out. I cut the snake head part of the down pipe close to the exhaust side of the turbo, raised the vehicle in the air and made another cut to the lower part of the pipe so I would not have to remove the cross member. Once all of this was done, I made two cuts to the pinch weld on the cab and utilized a hydraulic ram to indent the firewall of the cab to make enough clearance room for the new down pipe. I took the upper part of the down pipe and installed it to the exhaust side of the turbo and installed the lower from under the vehicle. All was needed was to verify any clearance issues with the cab and install the clamp connecting the two part system together.

Sorry that I may have given more information than what you may wanted or already knew, but this may help someone who is contemplating in doing this project as well...

If you don't have a porta-power, one can use a spud bar or similar primitive persuasive device to massage the firewall into shape.

ALSO: if you have more than the factory-recommended 7/8" between cab and bed, you can loosen the cab mount bolts and scooch the cab aft a bit; since the engine is fixed to the frame, as is the bed, sliding the cab aft gives more clearance between the cab and engine. Mine was 1-1/4" prior to replacing all the cab mount bushings, and I slid it aft 1/2", figuring the new poly mounts have virtually no slop. This gave me an extra 1/2" between the downpipe and firewall, so no more clearance issues.

I'm in the process in restoring my 1997 F250 PSD. I took some pictures of the cab and want to know if you would be interested in seeing them. It will show you where the cut was made on the cab and give you some idea what you're dealing with. I also took some pictures of the exhaust which was done in ceramic coating. Let me know if this would be helpful to you...
